I need some serious advice!

Original post by winkie07

So my Fiance and his Family are 100% greek and I am not greek. Needless to say I am getting married in a greek church even though me nor my families opinions were really considered, anyway my FMIL wants to play 15 greek songs at the wedding, and like 2 songs from crete and more then half the guests are my family who once again are non-greek. I dunno what to do because I think this is to many and that so many people will just be sitting around because my family doesn know this music. Plus his mother doesnt even know the songs and is trying to have someone find them, how important are they if you dont even know them. Between the first dance, parent dance, cake, dinner and other little things I would not have heard anything I want because of all the greek music. I am fine with playing like one an hr, what should I do??? Heelp and I am to nice to say anything.

well if it was me id tell her to kiss my a$$

what does your FH say? is it important to him to play greek songs? and have a greek ceremony? everything in our wedding is what FH and I want - we are not doing anything to please our parents because they are not paying for it and they already had their weddings - this is OUR wedding and its going to be everything that WE want.....i dont see anything wrong with playing a few greek songs but if its more songs than you and your FH are comfortable with than i wouldnt play all of them....

You crack me up, Nicole!

Well i am marrying a greek also, and I am italian, so we compromised, we will be playing greek, italian and american. We let the band know that if he sees no one is dancing, switch up the music.

In the end, it doesnt matter what music is playing, as long as people are up and dancing that is what counts!

YOu are 100% right it just matters that people are dancing...my problem is that i am TOLD not asked what to do or what is going to happen. Fianace and I are paying for the WHOLE wedding rehersal honeymoon everything, so i would just like to be asked and not told!!!!

you need to say these exact words to your husband

I completely agree. Discuss this with him and let him know your feelings. Take your FMIL's suggestions and when you submit a play list, make sure you include a mix of everything. I think many people who may not really be 'dancers' tend to get up to different music like that, so try not to worry too much. It sounds like what is bothering you more is that you feel like you are being 'told' and not asked. I don't blame you for that, but you need to discuss it with your FH and not take it out on him. This really sets the tone for how you will handle future potential issues with your in-laws or other issues in general. I understand what you're saying, but it's not good to build resentment.

FH is not Greek, I am and I know there would be no way we could not have Greek music. But I told my mother, from past experience with my sister's wedding, that we will only be doing 2/3 songs and 2 sets of greek music. SO figure about 6 songs the whole night maybe 7! And I will be sure to tell the DJ that!! Maybe you can have FH explain to his family the situation, I know sometimes it may be difficult especially since I am going through it with my mother, but i put my foot down and we are paying for this wedding so there isn't anything they can do about it!

Re: I need some serious advice!

I am sorry to hear this. My bestfriend is Greek and my other freind is married to a guy from Greece and they always say that the Man takes on the religion and traditions of the women. My friend who is greek her wedding was traditional greek and my friend who her husband is greek really didnt have anything that was greek b/c they do what the women wants. From what I have heard I would let FMIL know this and maybe back off. How about playing greek music during the cocktail hour? Or telling her to play less? Good luck!
