I need to go

Original post by Naunie

This job just isn't working out. I feel so depressed right now.
I wish they had just fired me this morning.
Everything I was told that made me take this job is a lie. I now have to right down everything I do all day every day, because I guess they think I don't do anything. But I work my asss off, and the deuche bag here is always dropping ish on my lap for immediate attention.
I get repremanded fore leaving short an 8 hour day, by maybe 5 minutes, when I never take a lunch break.
They changed the locks on me.
I get a call every day asking for a different name- someone that used to work here. He is a firing machine.
Fire me, please.

Do you think I should tll them now that I am preg?
BC that sort of puts them in a pickle, no?
Would I have some sort of recourse if I was fired after telling?
Do not tell them that you are PG.

I love all of your advice- can you elaborate on this nugget?
BC as it is, I am terrified to tell them, not sure why until this sudden fired realization hit me.
I have never been fired form a grown up job- I am kind of ashamed at the concept. I work hard here, it would all be on his hands- it's not any of my doing or non doing.
These people are effing nuts.

While it's absolutely illegal to fire someone b/c of their race, religion, etc....(includes disability or pregnancy) - why give them more amo to get rid of you? They could always turn around and say 'Well, you're only going to be here for another 6/5 months, and we need someone on a permanent basis.'

BUT, if they are already thinking of firing her, coming out as a preggo first will give them PAUSE, b/c they have no real reason.

you could sue them for wrongful termination with a 'valid' excuse, and they'd have to prove why they fired you, which, if you have in fact dotted your I's and crossed your T's, they can't.

If they're thinking of firing her - no matter she tells them she's PG or not - they never have to give a reason to WHY they are firing her. If she's THAT miserable there, and they're THAT unhappy w/her - it won't matter in the end.

You think these companies/employers 'feel bad' or have hearts - yeah okay. She's pregnant not dying from some fatal disease.

ETS: this is the exact definition of 'at will employee'

I was reading as she was now worried that she will be fired...I am a little confused.

I am not relying on their heart strings more than their purse strings.

an employer can be sued for wrongful termination, whether or not the terminated employee was 'at will' employed.

hell, even a prospective employee can sue a company that INTERVIEWED them if they feel they were discriminated against in any way. some have even won.

I worked for a company like this-fired people left and right. it's a terrible environment to work in.

I think we're all getting a little off-topic here when we're moving into the area of 'if she gets fired, she sues'. In the end, she wants to be fired b/c she's miserable there, and they are possibly getting rid of her for whatever reasons.

I just don't see the reasoning in announcing her pregnancy to them when she's not showing.

Naun - consider it this way, if you LOVED this company and wanted to stay, would you tell them you were PG this EARLY? It's usually recm'd to wait until you start showing or it's more obvious.

Finally, Naun - you need to continue looking for a job with full benefits. However, we need to work on your resume b/c 'jumping' around too much isn't really read very well now and days. Believe me - I know more than anyone. You also have to have solid reasons for your transitions and while I wish you the very best, it may be difficult finding another position being that you are PG.

I have a suggestion.

First, do you have benefits through D-Trains job?
If so, I suggest you find a temp to perm gig. OR just temp for now. That way, you can jump around if you want, until you find something that really fits, all while getting paid.

If you are still temping when you are ready to give birth, then no love lost. You can go right back to temping when you are ready, and hopefully find something great.

Yes- temping will be my plan, because of the prego thing.
I do not WANT to lose my job (inconvenience issues), but I would prefer they come out and fire me instead of my being paranoid every day.
I do hate it here, but I would suck it up over finding a new job. PLus, the timing is terrible, with Victor starting class for phase 2 and losing OT. I can't even afford to be jobless for a week.
I kind of just wanted a pity party I guess.

Ok, I just wrote this long-a$$ response, clicked enter and lost everything!

Anyways...I don't know what planet I was on but I didn't even know you were expecting! First of all, congratulations! And second, my personal opinion is to stay where you are until you give birth. You're already situated there, its close to your home, you can dress comfortably, and I think as long as you have health coverage and you're not stressed out, everything else I think its doable...just do what they ask you to and try to relax. The last thing you want to do is go to another job or temp. As far as telling them that you're preggo...I would wait until you start to show, which is usually around 4-5 months.

Most companies do not have a maternity leave program, so most women go out collecting Short Term Disabiility and/or utilize the Family Leave Act (bigger companies) where you can leave unpaid but you do have job security!

Your health, the baby, and a happy and stress-free environment is the most important thing for you right now...

Thanks Sylvia!
I know you're all right, too- I need to get over this apparent difiance with authority that I have lately. I blame hormones, but it's really just my style.
I actually feel so much better today, settled into the somewhat micro management, becaus eit's better than the complete lack of guidance I was receiving.
Hopefully they don't shitcan me.

I just wanted to add, for your peace of mind, do not feel ashamed about this. My aforementioned sucky job with sucky boss consisted of me being threatened over losing my job on a practically weekly basis. I was giving 110% and my boss was an insane a&%hole and it really affected me for a while, I totally feel your pain. Based on what you've said it sounds like this is nothing personal and is about your boss/job being ridiculous. Just keep your head held high and continue to work hard and you will have nothing to be ashamed about

btw, how do these people become bosses in the first place?

You need to tell them today that your Preggo. I almost got fired from a job once A$$hles also and I found out I was prego and told them and they won't fire you because they will fear that you will take them to court and say that they fired you because you were prego. Get Up - walk in to the managers office and say I thought you should now, but I am pregnant.

Congrats on the

Attentiono everyone- the fear is gone.
I had a nice chat with my new supervisor- the one who has thrown all the new rules on me, and I feel, for the first time ever here, secure.
Not that I love it here, but the #1 complaint I had was the insecurity. I feel better about it.
I get to wear comfy clothing in th ewinter, while prego, and that is good.
