I NEED TO KNOW IF THERE ARE ANY FEARFUL DRIVER OUT THERE

I was speaking with a friend of mine yesterday and she told me she no longer drives b/c she has become so fearful, she has had her license since she was 16 and now at 27, it has become a thing she fears doing. Do you or someone you know have a fear of driving?? I love to drive.

I like driving but I am cautious ( I had an aunt killed in a car accident when I was a kid).

I have a bunch of friends who have their driver's license but are afraid to use it!

Meee. I have had a license for 4 years now, and only drove during my lessons, and then moved to NY (I got the license to have a Legal 21 ID). I haven't driven since ten, but was in a bad accident 2 years ago, and since then have a fear... But I still have to re-learn how to drive, and that's my next project!!!

Shamma, I’m like you: I love to drive and can’t imagine going through life without that privilege. However, a good friend of my mother’s is in her forties and has never had a license purely because she’s scared. She says she’s seen “too many accidents” and she thinks people drive like nutcases. She takes the bus everywhere and catches rides with others when she can. She never had her license, though, and while that’s still hard enough to comprehend, it’s harder to understand someone who drove for more than ten years and then stopped after tasting the independence. Did she get in a traumatic accident?

I was in a bad accident lately and its not as much as I am afraid to drive but that I am afraid when OTHER people drive me around. Loss of control, I guess, since I wasn't the one driving when the accident happened. I constantly second guess their lane changes, etc, in my head. And I keep waiting to hear that THUNK noise & car spinning from the accident, its awful.

I was in a bad accident when I was 2, which I don't remember but have a small scar on my stomach from.

Then, when I was 16 I took lessons and my instructor took my on the LIE way before I was ready and I freaked out. Do you remember the scene in the movie Clueless when they are on the highway? It was me all the way (that's not why I call myself Clueless btw, but it fits here).

I've lived in the city most of my life so thank god I don't have to drive.

Hey Shamma - I too was in a bad accident (no injuries thank God) but it did take me a while to gain the confidence in myself to drive like 'normal.' After the accident, I was shook up for so long that I probably shouldn't have been driving bc I flinched at every single little thing. Now and again I get that same feeling. But yes, I don't knwo what I would do w/o my car...

The funny thing is she has never been in an accident, she said that she fears not being able to stop. She said she probably needs a hypnotist, mind you she is a city girl, who use to drive fast and do her thing, she says she got on the parkway last week and got right off, she gets panic attacks I think on parkways.

My mother is guilty of having a license and uses it only as a form of identification.

I love the freedom and independence driving gives me. I understand people who have been in accidents but I don't understand people who just don't drive b/c of what they have seen or heard.

I dont have a fear of driving but I find that I find it more aggravating than I use to. I've had my license for awhile but then I lived in the City for a few years so I was driving minimally then. Now that I am back in the outerboroughs and LI, I think people are so aggressive sometimes it seems like such a battle. Believe me, I get in there with the aggressive driving (it annoys DH) but I don't go out of my way to inflame or harrass people. Some drivers are outrageous. And then there are the ones who are the stupidest drivers...to the point of being not just annoying, that I can deal with, but dangerous on the road. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood for people's road issues and I definitely prefer that DH drive.

nope not me. I was hit by a car when I was 7, been in 4 accidents (one which sent me into the hospital....and to just clarify I was not the driver in these 4 accidents), I couldnt live with out my car

I am not fearful of driving, I love it! But what I am fearful of is being a passenger, I don't feel like I'm in control when DH is doing 75 mph, but when I am its perfectly fine.

I think I'm ready for the backseat.....

I am the same as Kate. I am not afraid to drive myself, but when I am a passenger, I am so afraid. With DH I swear I have mini anxiety attacks every time he drives, or anyone else for that matter!!

I am a fearful driver! I drive every day to work about 40 minutes when it could take me 15 but I will not get on the highway! I think I am a very good driver but I dont trust people around me. I am afraid of them..I know i follow laws and drive cautiously.

DANDJ IF YOU READ THIS...tell Jerry I STILL dont drive the highway...he will get a laugh out of it for sure!

I have a friend who sideswiped a car whil ein Driver's ed, and now at the age of 31, still hasn't gotten her license..

Me - I don't love to drive, but I do if I have to. I couldn't imagine not having the freedom to go where you want to go. It's not that I am a fearful driver, it's just that there are so many morons on the road these days it gets me riled up.

And don't even get me started on those who drive while talking on a cell phone!

You see, ladies, I am the fearful friend and I told Shamma this yesterday at lunch, and she told me that she was going to post this as a question, and I guess I just didn't believe her .... .... anyway, yes, lately my fear of driving has gotten worse. I use to drive over bridges, in tunnels, parkways, expressways and throughout the city, but lately, I just can't seem to do it and I don't know why. (Unless my theory that I died in a car accident in my past life is correct)

But I feel better knowing that I'm not alone ... it's a terrible feeling and I hate feeling this way - I need to work on this, but thanks Shamma for trying to research my problem.

A friend of mine won't drive in ANY snow even flurries, she hates driving in the rain and she hates driving at night.

I love driving and I couldn't imagine being prisioner to the weather.

Am I that friend?? I have been known to call out of work at the slightest little flurry in the winter and I freak out in the rain!!!! I am sooo petro...driving is NOT a relaxing thing for me at all!
