DD is in 5th, I don't think she's doing percentages yet. I'd venture that for middle school.

She came home one day with a question that stumped all of us. Baskin-Robbins has 31 flavors, how many combinations of 2-scoops are there? For example:
1) vanilla-vanilla
2) vanilla-chocolate
3) chocolate-chocolate
etc...

Anybody know how to do it mathematically without writing them all out like that??

I think it is 961 combinations. 31 x 31. (I originally did 31 x 30 but that would only be if you couldn't get two scoops of the same flavor)

Suz, that's what I thought too but then I Googled it and got all these crazy '31 factorial' or '31!' equations. Apparently it depends whether or not order matters. I still don't know the right answer, I need to ask her to ask the teacher.

31 factorial would be if you could have 31 flavors in each bowl. Oh and it would only be 31 factorial if you could not repeat flavors. If you could repeat flavors and were to have 31 flavors in a bowl then it would be 31^31

Suz is right- it's 31 squared, becaus eyou are looking for 2 scoops. For 3 scoop combinations, it's 31 to the third power.
31! is just a fancy way of saying 31 to the 31st power.
