I need to VENT. Very long, sorry.

I need to VENT. Very long, sorry.

This is a long story, and I just need to vent.
Here is some background family stuff. My dad doesn’t get along with my aunt (mom’s sister) or most of my mom’s side. Therefore he never goes to parties at their houses. When I got engaged, my aunt said to my mom that since my dad never goes to any parties then no one will want to come to our parties (implying my wedding).
Cut to a few months after my engagement, my aunt said she wants to throw me a shower, and I was so grateful to her. Before the invites for the wedding went out, she was complaining to my brother that she was never told what day the wedding was on. So I called her, thanked her for offering to throw me the shower, and told her the date of my wedding. I had already told her during Christmas what day it was going to be, but she had forgotten. So I jokingly said, “Make sure you write it down. Go get a pen now and write it down, so you don’t forget.”
So earlier this week, we get a call from a family friend that she is having a party the day we had planned for my shower. Then my aunt leaves a message asking if I’d mind to change the date of the shower. That is when all hell broke loose. I had no problem changing it. So when my mom called our friend and said we will come to her party, my aunt got mad and said that she didn’t want to go to the party anyway, and why did we change the date of the shower. I don’t know all of the details of the conversation, but at some point my mom said to her that my dad doesn’t understand the custom of showers anyway, so it doesn’t matter if we have one for me anyway. I called my aunt when I got home from work to talk about the date of the shower, and she proceeded to scream at me for about 5 minutes straight. She said that I am rude and obnoxious for telling her to get a pen and write down the date of the wedding. And that my parents are ungrateful to her for offering to throw me a shower. She then went on to say that she doesn’t care about my wedding, and she won’t throw me a shower or come to the wedding. Then hung up on me.
Now I know my wedding may not be a big deal to her, but it is a big deal for me. I don’t expect people to throw me a parade or even a shower, but don’t tell me you don’t care about my wedding. I was just so upset at the whole conversation. I have always been so respectful to all my aunts, and the one time I try to joke around with her, she becomes so angry. I would like a shower, but it’s not a big deal. I feel like because I am this normally quite girl, everyone thinks they can say anything about me and I won’t care. She really hurt my feelings, and I’ve been so depressed since the phone call. This wedding has become a nightmare. All I want is to get it over with and go on my honeymoon. I’m going to go cry now.

Sorry you have to deal with this. If you have a bridal party maybe they can handle your shower - this way you don't need your aunt?

OMG!!! I am so sorry this is happening to you!!
I don't think you were disrespectful at all when suggesting the pen and paper. It was a joke, she took it the wrong way. I think family issues really stink, I have them too and they are driving me insane as well. I know what you are feeling. I am so sorry!!!!!!!

You know what since she is going to be like that, then you and your mom and bp should plan your own shower. I'm sure it will be great.
I am sorry that family would do this to you. I don't understand why family, friends, well everyone get so crazy when someone is getting married.

I agree... I'm sorry that you're going through this... but it's time that the quiet girl speaks up. You should call your aunt and tell her how she made you feel. Your wedding is not about her, it's about you & FH.
Also, I would tell her that if she doesn't plan on coming to the wedding, that's on her, because you still plan on sending her an invite, and you'd appreciate that she respond. She didn't really mean that she doesn't care about your wedding... she was just pissed. Would she think about throwing a shower for someone she didn't care about? She cares.

I know how you feel too. My entire family as well as FH's is driving me insane. I mean really - I have never had the need to drink wine on a weeknight since I got engaged!!! I cant wait until its all over - I wish I would have thought it out a little and just went to Vegas.

Anyway, dont let this thing with your aunt upset you any further. If she wants to act like that, let her. You have your own things to concentrate on right now and you dont need added stress.

I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. I must say I don't quite understand what made your aunt FLIP out like that because I don't see where anyone did anything to wrong to her, including you!

Looks to me like sometimes when people offer to do something nice for someone else, it's only to get recognition for themselves. It seems to me like this is what happened with your aunt. She seems to have felt (for what reason I can't tell) that SHE and her shower for you weren't being given enough attention, praise, thanks, whatever and decided to flip out and be a big giant drama queen.

I have no tolerance for drama queens when they behave like this. Sounds to me like she's acting like a child and all she wants is for you and your come to come crawling to her, begging forgiveness and kissing her butt. If that's the case, you have 2 options:

1 - kiss her butt, make nicey-nice and everything will return to normal (i.e. give her exactly what she wants)

2 - ignore her and she will either abandon her immature threats and come around herself or she'll come through on her threats and not show up at your wedding in order to draw MORE attention to herself.

Neither are pretty, I know. The other thing is maybe your Mom can talk some sense into her.

Again, I am sorry you have to deal with this!!

JMO, but I think you shoud write her a letter. I find that letters are the best way to express yourself without being interupted or argued with. Let her know that she really hurt your feelings and you're not even sure why she was so upset to yell at you like that. Let her know that it's important to you that she be at your wedding, after all, she's family. Get all of your thoughts out without being nasty, but don't hold anything back. Then the ball is in her court. You've said your peace and whatever she decides to do it on her. Good luck!

So sorry. You clearly didn't deserve any of this. this really sounds like it is your aunt's problem, or that she is using this situation to vent some pretty negative feelings related to other family-related issues. I hope that she realized how completely inappropriate she was to you. She owes you an apology and you owe yourself to not let her ruin your excitement and anticipation for your big day.

Wow, it makes no sense why your aunt went so crazy. I would be so upset if my mom's sister spoke to me like that. I too am quiet and she totally took the pen thing the wrong way. She had no right to blow up at you like that...I would probably have my mom call her to find out what the hell happened. To go as far as saying that she doesn't care about the wedding and that she isn't going is crazy...I also think the comment about her saying she wasn't going to go because your father doesn't go to their parties is also crazy. Sorry that so much turmoil is going on. Good luck!

you know what, i feel bad with you. my mom's two sisters are not coming to my wedding. yes my mom uninvited them because apparently childhood drama came up and my mom felt they may lash out at the wedding. it really depressed me but i look at all the other people around me who can't wait for my day and it makes me feel better. my mom threw me a shower but that's about it. i don't even know if my job will. trust me when you get enveloped in all the planning and stuff everything will be alright. i don't even know if i will get a gift from the. or an acknowledgement but i have my son and my husband and that's all that matters remember that.

I'm sorry you are going through this. You sound even more mature than your aunt. And your aunt is very inconsiderate and rude not to say the least. It's your wedding and it is something special. Perhaps your bridal party can get together and throw you the shower that you deserve....a GREAT one. Don't let anyone make you feel bad. It's your day, it's your wedding...and yes, It is SPECIAL....don't let anyone take that away from you. I send you lots and lots

Thanks ladies for all the reassuring comments. I think I'll just lay low for a while. I have so many other things to deal with now. Her childish blow-ups will just have to wait.
Thanks again for all the well wishes. I know you ladies would make me feel better.

Family members seem to forget that a 'Wedding' is about the Bride and Groom - NOT the rest of the family - They are GUESTS to SHARE in the joy of your day !! -
I can imagine how upset you are, talk to your mom and see how she thinks you should handle it. -
I would NOT write her a letter, - if she's going to flip out and throw a teeny little joke in your face months later, - imagine how far she could mis interpret a letter !!
