This weekend we are going to go over the guest list for our wedding. We need to guarantee 175 people to meet our minimum. FH says he rather be slightly under than go over and have to pay for say another 20 guests - which is fine with me - if we dont make our minimum at least we know that we dont have to pay for extra people plus we really wanted the room and were willing to pay a little more to get it.
So my question is how many people do you think we should invite to get close to 175? I really have no clue.

Honestly not everyone is going to say yes - usually its 10-20% say no.
We invited 141 but only want 100 people. But since we had to invite all these people we feel we will get at least 115.
So if you really only want 175 i would invite 180-185 and you probably will only get 170

okay - well the 'standard' amount of people that will say no to attending is 20%.
BUT - then there are the girls who EVERYONE says yes....
AND then there are the girls who more than half say no....
It's really rough...
the math works out at 220 people invited can expect 176 people actually coming...

The average 'they' say is that 15-20% will no show up. However, if you send out save the date cards then I hear its more like 15% will not show.
I would say if you invite 200-205 you will have 175 or a little less.

You figure you want to invite about 10% -20% more because that is around how many people will respond no.
So, you should probably invite around 200

Maybe this will give you an idea:
my sister-in-law is having my nephew's baptism in 2 weeks...she has a 150 minimum, sent out 180 invites (no one beyond the tri-state area was invited) and has 141 guests coming.
and baptisms are just as important as weddings in our culture, so it's not like people said no because they think baptisms aren't important.

see it hard b/c we will be inviting a lot of people that i dont really know - just to be gracious, you know for our parents sake.....and i dont expect any of those people to show up - they are people i havent seen since im 10 - literally.....so that is probably 25-35 people right there that i really dont think will show up so I don't know if I should really include them in my count of inviting only 220 people.....BUT there is always that slight chance they will say yes and then we'll be screwed
did that make any sense
i hope you guys understood what im trying to say.......if i only invite say 215 - but am almost positive that 20 of them arent coming then its like i really only invited 195 and then we might be under - because you still have to expect that 15-20% of the 195 people left on the list wont come....

We have to guarantee 175 as well and we're looking to invite 190-200...also b/c we can use our vendors towards our minimum. so if we're under 175 the photog./video, and band will be added towards that number as well

yeah you cant guarantee people to say no...ive seen alot of girls say they invited people they thought would say no and were shocked when ALL of them said yes, i think this happened to an LIW'er recently and then people who you expect without a doubt to come will rsvp NO

oh god I totally understand what your saying this is tough... i say invite 200... they do say 20% dont come but everyones different... im sure all atleast 20-30 out of the 200 wont be able to come..

My advise is to stick to the 20% rule and include EVERYONE in that. You will be surprised at the people that will respond yes.
If you want around 175 people give or take a few then invite between 200-210.
The only people you should not include in a count are those that you are are 150% sure won't come -- example an older relative who can't travel but you need to send an invite anyway.

For that you may have a smaller number...you can be less formal and send to 'Family X' even if later you will send to 'Mr & Mrs X' and their adult son 'Mr. X' (I did this with my adult cousins who are still living with their parents)

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE only send out STDs to family members and CLOSE friends. . . and I mean CLOSE as in you would have them in your will friends
