I think I'm getting fired

This week has been nothing short of a nightmare. I was on vactation last Wed, Thurs, Fri, and Sat. I requested the days off in Feb, had my boss sign the request form and reminded her the Monday before I left (as she told me to). When I got back to work I had alot of emails to sort through. She sent me nasty emails while I was out which appeared to be written stream of conscience as things came up day by day. They got nastier and more acusatory as the days went on. She never said welcome back, how was it, or even a 'good morning' when returned to work.

Then, yesterday, she called me into her office and started crying, telling me that when so and so leaves the department (TODAY), she doesnt know if I am going to be able to handle the added responsibilies. And also critized me for not having my out of office on in outlook when I was away. (I checked, it was on, plenty of people received it) She then sent me a nice email polietly asking me to do something. She cries then yells, then gives the silent treatment. I dont know what to do, I am worried that I am going to be fired. I cant take working for such an unstable person anymore.

wow thats horrible- who likes coming back from vacation and having to deal with all that stress! your message just made my stomach flop. i would hate dealing with that! im sorry that you are worried about your job security.

i really hope she was just having one of her episodes. it sounds like she is very very depressed. unfortunately, you have to deal with her.

I would start looking for work elsewhere. I worked for someone who was bipolar. When she was up she was so wonderful and sweet and full of praise. But when she was unhappy, look out!

It was starting to affect the rest of my life - I would come home and not want to do anything but go to sleep. I was depressed and I didn't know it. when you're having a bad time at work, it shows in other aspects of your life.

You deserve to be treated better!

The way she is acting is very unprofessional! Is there someone higher up than her that you can talk to?
In the meantime, I would start looking elsewhere.

I think there's something clinically wrong with her too, and so do my friends and family. It makes me really nervous, I am on egg shells all the time, but now its gotten worse. She was so nice when I interviewed, even the first few weeks, then she turned like Jekyl and Hyde. There were layoffs about 2 months ago, which has increased her workload. She doesnt keep me on top of whats going on, sometimes even gives me incorrect info, which I then build on, and I end up getting blamed for mistakes which originated from hers. (the new thing is that I have to check her work before it gets emailed to anyone) There's no communication between us, its all done via email, and god forbid I go into her office to ask a question, she shoos me away. But I end up feeling bad for her when she starts crying.

I am looking for a new job TODAY when I get home.
I really dont know who I could talk to here about it, my co-workers are afraid of her too, and think she's nuts

What Farah said about your job affecting the other aspects of your life is so true - it affects everything!! That's what I am going through right now at my new job - only been here a week but DH wants me to quit because I am very unhappy!!

I hope something better comes your way soon - can you afford to quit and temp for a bit while you're interviewing?

Thanks for the support, I really do feel better knowing that this isnt normal. Im in publishing. I really like everyone else I work with here, its just her. I'm her assistant, but she has another subordinate (he is such a great guy, I love him) and he just told me he's going to the gym now to get out his anger at her.
If it comes down to it, and I cant take it anymore, I can live for a little while temping while I look for another job....
She left for the day....WOO HOO!!

Ugh! what the heck is it with the Publishing industry!!! I think it attracts these type of people. I swear! I know exactly what you are going through-- I was there!

ETA: I don't think you're getting fired... you would have to received at least a warning from HR in order to be fired.... (at least that's how it is in the other publishing companies I worked for)

I totally agree on how your work effects the rest of your life. I too HATE my job so much that I sometimes go home and sleep too. I guess I need to get out too. Hang in there and start job searching. You deserve much better than that !!!!

This totally reminds me of my old boss. She was so horrible. She used to write me awful emails, and I would read them and just cry - I was in constant shock at how much I did for her and how she never recognized all the blood, sweat and tears...she was always complaining and talk about MOODY!

Well, I ended up getting 'let go' because of 'economic reasons' - it was the best thing that ever happened to me.

I still, unfortunately, have nightmares about this woman.

Oh my do you work in my old office? - my boss was definately crazy! Just becuase he had problems and was miserable he made everyone else's lives that way! I am so glad that I am no longer there to even have to imagine what he could possibly come up with from day to day
Just get out of there - there are better jobs out there!

I am so sorry you are going through this. My boss gets like this too. I think it is very hard to work for a woman because they work on emotions.
My boss sat me down the day I came back from maternity leave and told me 'We found a lot of mistakes you made before you left and you did not train so and so right'. I was 9 months pregnant and had 3 weeks to train her everything I knew in 8 years!!

Sorry to hear that...I have been there its an awful feeling

I can totally relate, my old principal was unstable like that and only took her meds on/off. We all definitely knew when she wasn't!!!

I would just like to annouce that I am being called to Human Resources with my psycho boss. She is going to sitting there and I dont know how I am going to explain in FRONT of her that the reason that things dont get done 'properly' is because she doesnt give me instructions, or allow to me ask questions...she shoes me away....
