I just noticed a scratch on my diamond. I brought it in to the jewelers a few weeks ago and just noticed the scratch today. What can I do if they did switch my stone?

Re: I think the jeweler switched my diamond
i dont know...but i was always suspicious that the same thing happened to me! when we got engaged, the ring was 1/2 a size too small so we brought it to be resized. when we got it back their was a small scratch that they say was there when we dropped it off! NUH UH!!! but nonetheless, they said i could exchange the ring which DH was fine with but to me i was thinking 'what if this IS the original and i never noticed the scratch. if i get a different one then it wont be the same ring that he actually proposed to me with!'. i was torn so i just left it alone. but DH said maybe for our 1st anniversary he'll just get a bigger stone, that way its the same ring! gotta love him!!!!

Was it your jewler? You might just not have noticed the scratch until now.

do you have your certificate of authenticity? take it to a reputable gemoligical society. there are several in the city that do independant appraisals. based upon the measurements on your original certificate they will know if its the same stone. Your certificate also lists any imperfections in the stone, so if they were there before it will say on there. If its not the same stone, SUE them. Check out IGL, i think thats where we went for our appraisal.
ps if you need a lawyer let me know. My fiancee and I are both attorneys lol.

It wasn't the jeweler we originally bought the ring from. I inspect my ring everyday and today was the first time I noticed the scratch. I called my insurance company and she said to have another jeweler look at it and if it turns out it is a fake, go back to the store and tell them. She told me to file a police report and wait to see if the jewelry shop will replace it.

If they did switch your ring that's stealing. If you had your ring appraised you should take the ring they gave you and have it appraised to ensure everything matches up.

Go get it reappraised... my prong came loose and we got it fixed. I was so worried about it that we went to get it reappraised and it was the same ring. We used the Jewelry judge on Old Country Rd

can you get an actual scratch in a real diamond? if you can, i must have to think that it is super hard to do, and you probably didnt do it.
i agree with everyone else - your appraisal will have every fact on it, bring it to an appraiser, they will be able to tell if its the same.

I agree with the scratch. It is hard to scratch a diamond. Unlike a CZ.

Get it checked!
I agree. Real diamonds are VERY hard to scratch. And even if it is your original diamond, if the jeweler scratched it, he should be responsible. If he switched it, sue that motherf!cker!

How long did he have the ring? Without you watching them anything is possible.
I had my ring cleaned and resized a cart in the mall!!! Because i didn't want to give it to someone and have it be out of my sight.
Take it to get appraised and see what they say.

I did have this happen before....my first e-ring from years ago [first engagement....should've beena sign to run the other way sooner] was switched...i had resized and the next day after it was returned, i noticed a LARGE totally visible black spot...they swore it had always been that way....i knew better...but i just didn't fight it that hard....like i said, for me, it should've been a sign.

What I do anytime my ring is out of my sight, when I go back to pick it up , I look at the diamond under a microscope and make sure the nuber on the diamond is the same as the number on my appraisal

Re: I think the jeweler switched my diamond
I thought only another diamond can scratch a diamond....
also, your diamond should have a number engraved on it...you have to look under a microscope to see it.
Good luck!

Re: I think the jeweler switched my diamond
did you get a certificate of authenticity when your FH bought your ring? my ring has a serial number or something like that lasered into it. When DH proposed to me, the ring was too small, so I had to drop it at the jewlers to be resized. When I picked it up they let me look under the microscope at my diamond and match the #'s up.

Re: I think the jeweler switched my diamond
take it to a reputable appraiser with your certificate and they can compare to see if it is the same stone. I was told not to let a jeweler do anything to my ring unless I watched them do it. You can also get the stone inscripted with a laser code so that you can see it with the loop.
