I just noticed a scratch on my diamond. I brought it in to the jewelers a few weeks ago and just noticed the scratch today. What can I do if they did switch my stone?

Diamonds can scratch diamonds but so can Stainless Steel.

Re: I think the jeweler switched my diamond
Is your diamond laser inscribed? If so, it should say the certificate number in the diamond and it should match the certificate it came with. That would help a lot if it is. I would definitely take it to a jeweler and get it appraised and see what they say.
You should never give anyone your diamond to clean it or anything without being able to watch them do it. That is so important..
If you do find that it was switched, I would, without hesitation file a police report!!
Good luck and I hope things work out for you.
I too used the diamond judge in Mineola/Carle Place.. He was excellent.

A regular appraisal won't tell you much beyond color size clarity. A mapping of the stone will show you every thing. Scratches, black spots, etc. Find out if one was ever done on your stone.

If you ever leave your ring with a jewler especially if it's not the one you bought it from you have them take the stone out and give it to you on the spot then you have them put it in when you pick up the ring.

Re: I think the jeweler switched my diamond
Just wanted to say I think the same thing may have happened to me! I had a stone in my setting replaced and when I got the ring back i noticed a scratch AND a white spot that I had never seen before. I havent told FH because I'm worried that maybe I just never saw it b4 but it was always there? But this happened over a month ago, so I think its too late now. We never had ours appraised anyway, so I dont think we'd be able to proove anything

Check your paperwork. I too have a laser inscribed number so when I dropped it off at the jewelers. I had them read me back the number without the paperwork to make sure it was the same diamond. Definitely do not let it go...There are soo many thieves out there working for reputable jewelers....good luck!!!!

That is nuts. Definitely take it to where you got it appraised and make sure it is in fact the same diamond.

Re: I think the jeweler switched my diamond
Was your stone etched or lasered at all?? Could it have possibly been a scratch that you did not realize initially??? Sometimes the jeweler will list any faults in the stone.....

Re: I think the jeweler switched my diamond
When something like this happens to you and anyone else you should tell your FI. If he was the one to pick out the diamond then he should know if there was a dot or scrach on it, plus it is not your fault if someone does a switch.

Definitely, definitely, definitely look at the GIA certification to see if the number matches and if you don't have one definitely get it re-appraised. Even if you only had an appraisal, they will be able to tell you if the 4 C's match.
Good luck!

Re: I think the jeweler switched my diamond
Do you have your diamond's certificate? If so, take it to a reputable jeweler and have them compare the number inscribed on your diamond to what's on the document. From what I've heard it's really hard to scratch a diamond. If it isn't your stone, go back to that jeweler and get your diamond back! Good luck and keep us posted.
