I totally feel ripped off!

Original post by CulinaryCouple

We went to finalize our menu and cake plans with the RH today. We wanted a plain white fondant cake and I almost died when I heard the 'upgrade cost'. Did anyone else upgrade their cake, and how much more was it? I totally feel ripped off!

I would feel ripped off also I would do what another previous bride suggested...find out how much your allowance is for the cake and take the voucher to the Rolling Pin Bakery and negotiate yourself. FYI that bakery has a really good reputation!!
I upgraded to a fondant cake for $150. The fondant had buttercream underneath.

ok, so I called my RH and they told me if I don't use their cake I get $1 per person to use towards something else. What the heck can you add on for $1! So either way I lose.

I was mad with the cake options at the east wind as well i felt totally taken off guard we did not upgrade anything we ended up doing the option with the dots and no rosettes and i bought ribbon to be put around each layer to be honest the buttercream looked awesome heres a pic of my cake

that is similar to what we did, except i told them to nix the dots at our final meeting (would have had more dots than yours -- i like yours a lot). our florist decorated it -- i would have had them leave the loose petals off, but no biggie. i'm just glad it worked out with the ribbon

that could totally be done with whipped or butter cream!!

That sounds odd to me...we had a big cake (see album) and we chose fondant at our finalization meeting and there was no charge for it.

A year ago when we booked our hall I was told to add fondant was an extra $1.50 per person. My mom complained that nobody likes fondant and insisted we don't have it. We are most likely doing red velvet and that's about the same price extra per person too.

This is the cake that I want. The only thing the RH needs to supply is the plain white cake and I am supplying the rest. When I heard the price for just the fondant I was like

Just out of curiousity - have you found the rhinestones yet? I wanted to do that too, but the cheapest I could find was like 30 bucks per yard...and since I needed 10 yds, I decided against it...

My RH told me that usually they peel off the fondant before they serve it... So I am def not paying to upgrade my cake esp if its going to get peeled off... I used to decorate cakes when I was in HS and you can use smooth icing to create the same effect and it tastes much much better
