We went to finalize our menu and cake plans with the RH today. We wanted a plain white fondant cake and I almost died when I heard the 'upgrade cost'. Did anyone else upgrade their cake, and how much more was it? I totally feel ripped off!

Ok girls, I have to tell you...my RH wants to charge $5 per person extra to add fondant! At a minimum of 150 guests, that's $750!

This is the cake that I want. The only thing the RH needs to supply is the plain white cake and I am supplying the rest. When I heard the price for just the fondant I was like
That is one of the cakes I wanted also. Bringing a pic of it with me and seeing if they can do the smooth icing instead!

geez thats nuts- the bakery by my house was charging me $500 for 125 people with buttercream- the upgrade that they are charging you is more than the entire cake.
what do they include for the cake?

$750 extra to upgrade to fondant seems insane to me, but $750 for the cake itself isnt as bad... i dont really know, our cake was included and i didnt price our upgrades or other options

That is ridiculous - tell them you want them to pay whatever your allowance is and then pick your own bakery - our rh gave us a few choices and said we could go anywhere we want and they will pay X amount of money. We have a chocolate buttercream layer with fondant over it to achieve the taste we like and the design FH wanted

Yes the cake was included in our package, but there were only a few to choose from. We are both chefs so the presentation of the food is important to us. We were told that they could do anything if we had something different in mind. It drives me nuts that they would even charge this for a plain white cake.

I think that East Wind uses Rolling Pin Bakery. If so, definitely ask East Wind how much they are going to allot towards your 'included' cake and then meet with David at Rolling Pin yourself. His work is excellent and his cakes are very tasty. There's a lot of shady stuff that occurs between RHs and other vendors. It's best if you can be the person negotiating rather than leaving it up to the RH. In any case, I recommend that you go straight to the baker with your east wind 'voucher' so to speak. Good Luck!!!

Yea, I wanted a fondont cake as well. However, when we tasted it it was discusting, Beyond gross...so we decided that we weren't going to make the whole cake fondont. We will be using it very little on our cake.
The price was crazy as well. It was around $1,000 to upgrade.
Honestly, it is a waste of money-looks great-but total waste of money especially because I enjoy sweets, and I wasn't going to not enjoy my cake.

They charge extra for BUTTERCREAM!! Scam!!! Don't use them.. that's ridiculous. I can understand Fondant.. but Butter cream!!! OMG!

Since I did not like the cake selections and my RH does not make cupcakes, I chose to not use the cake provided and go elsewhere.
Fondant was not listed on the cake options but I'm sure there would have been an upgrade charge, if we went with that.

I was mad with the cake options at the east wind as well i felt totally taken off guard we did not upgrade anything we ended up doing the option with the dots and no rosettes and i bought ribbon to be put around each layer to be honest the buttercream looked awesome heres a pic of my cake
we went with totally different cake than what the offer ....it was wayyyyy more but I love it

well it all depends on the bakery they use not really up to the RH. The Rh works with the bakery to do their cakes, but since the bakery usually gives it at a discounted price for doing business with them constantly, is the reason why you usually get a basic cake. The money paid to the bakery actually comes from your balance. Some Rh's have to pay bakeries about $250 for a cake, others are different. Thats part of your services charge.
If it costs more to do fondant, the price you are given is what the bakery wants to charge if somebody requests to do this. Since fondant is more expensive and takes longer to work with some bakeries will charge their regular prices if somebody wants an upgrade, other bakeries will still work with the Rh and give it at somewhat of a discount. But its all up to the bakery they use
my rh told me how much they would pay the bakery for a cake. But i decided to use someone else completely different for my cake so not sure how much my rh charges for upgrades

haha total upgrade of my cake came out to about 350. we had fondant, and a square cake. I feel ripped off.

I was told that East Wind charges $4 per person un buttercream, so that's out too!
