So here is some background. My friend called me, she worked at a preschool. They were looking for someone new, cause the director was gonna fire two people. So, I called and said, I would love to come interview, but just to let you know, I am getting married in Nov and I will need thse 5 days off. She said no problem. I went in and she said she wasn't happy with one of the girls cause she feels uncomfortable that she just had a baby and she may want to stay home. And the other girl she didn't like because she worked at another preschool and she didnt want rumors going around. So, she wound up hiring me, she said she loved me.....I told her the days I needed off- no problem she says. We all got friendly, so stupid me says I may move in the future. This got her freaked out thinking I am gonna move tomorow. So, I see that she is interviewing people now! Some girl came in Wed and today, who she told me was an 'observer'. At the end of the day she tells me she needs to talk to me and she says ' I guess you know what I am gonna tell you' I said no, she said ' I have to let you go' I said why, she said, ' well to be honest I told like how you work' she said one time I left a toy in the wrong place and she saw me sitting too much. So then I said, really and she said and also, your taking too much time off on the honeymoon. I said I TOLD YOU THAT BEFORE I EVEN INTERVIEWED!!! She goes ya ya and so then I told her I think you are being very rude to fire someone two weeks before their wedding and she goes, well your being unprofessional about this. So I walked out and that was that.
I just feel so depressed about it. I feel like maybe I am a bad teacher. Or is she just a psychpath???

WOW! She is NASTY and I can tell you as a parent I wouldnt want my child in a preschool were people are constantly revolving through the door, hiring and firing, hiring and firing...

I was thinking the same thing. Children need structure and routine, and by having different teachers all the time is ridiculous.
Take the next few weeks and concentrate on your wedding. Worry about the job hunt when you get back!

I'm sorry this happened. If you & FH are financially able to, why don't you take these 2 weeks to relax, fix up your resume, finish up any last wedding plans and look for a job after the honeymoon?

The three of you [the 2 she fired before] all need to seriously threaten her with a lawsuit if not actually sue her. That is TOTAL BS discrimination...you hinted you might move away someday and you need 5 days off for your HONEYMOON that she knew about in advance...to be honest, she came up with semi-valid reasons to keep her from seeming OBVIOUSLY discriminatory. The fact that she told you or anyone why she fired the other 2 are grounds for TROUBLE. This is a total blessing....no one should work somewhere like that OR be treated that way.

At least you held your self up professionally I would of done something in response to the toy not being in its place. This woman is clearly a nut and very possibly shouldn't be running this daycare because i can't imagine how she acts around the children.
It also sounds like a revolving door and if she has any hire up's i would write a letter of concern over her behavior to her managers. Normally i would say leave and let it go but since kids are involved i really would worry.
But as of your health and well being don't sweat it because what I realized is a job isn't a life and it is not apart of you and you shouldn't never let it be apart of you or how it defines you. A job is a place in which to put dinner on the table and afford the nicer things in life.So take some time to relax and rethink and move on to another job because things will be great for you. Good people have good things happen to them.

Thank you everyone. I still feel a little sad about it, but now I've turned angry. You all have lifted my spirits so much, and you have no idea how much it means to me during this crazy time. You are all so nice and so thoughtful and I just wanted to tell you all that. Thank you so much.

I lost my job a month before my wedding so I know how you feel, and the reasons given to me were BS as well.
You don't want to work for someone like this anyway!! You are better off not being there, trust me!! Life is too short to work for someone who gets gun shy the moment she hears someone might need time off. You do have a case for a lawsuit as do the others she fired. In the meantime, maybe you can collect unemployment to help with the final payments and finances.

I agree with cheryl- I would try to contact those other two (and maybe there are even others) and get your stories together and file a lawuit against this women. Everything she is doing sounds highly unprofessional and discriminatory

You think a lawsuit would really work? I though NY was an 'at will' state meaning they can fire you at any time with no reasons....

nearly all jobs are 'at will' BUT you cannot fire someone b/c you THINK they'll need some time off for GIVING BIRTH, for taking a HM you knew about and approved the time off for OR quite frankly, for just not liking them. If you were all in reality doing your jobs and she has no proof you all S*CKED at it, then she ILLEGALLY fired you on her own bias. THAT is what she did that is WRONG...PLUS she discussed with you why and how she fired other people...as a general rule [possibly law...] it isn't allowed. just like at your next job, if they call for a reference, she isnt' even allowed to sayshe fired you b/c it unfairly paints you as a bad employee...all she can actually say is you worked there from date to date. in reality, she can't say anything else...and she shouldn't be telling other people as well.

I don't need the money, I have another sub job, I just feel like I am a bad teacher cause of what she said. She also told me I looked depressed. ? Whats that about? Also, I got yelled at cause I didnt give 24 hour notice when I was sick with a 102 fever....
WHOAAAAA COO COO!! That woman sounds crazy! You are lucky you don't have to go back. You should do something fun in the mean time. Get a job at Macy's and benefit from the employee discount for your holiday shopping! you have too much going on right now to deal with that woman, how can you predict 2 days in advance if you will have a 102 fever. She should be thankful you didn't come in and get the kids sick.
