I was offered a job...what would you do???

Original post by beautyq115

Ok...today I was offered a job at a private school ...there are some catches...its a leave replacement with no benefits and there is a possiblitly the lady won't come back but they are not sure..and I don't know when she is supposed to come back

I am going to meet with the Principal to discuss it further on Monday.

I am afraid that if I take it..something else might come along BUT I am afraid not to take it for fear that nothing else will come along

But why?

I know most districts dont give benefits while they are giving a perosn on leave benefits.. so you need to find out if this is the case, and if so when you would be aloud to take them.

Like this past year I was hired as a leave, her maternity leave was up in february and she didnt come back so I was then able to take benefits from the distric.t

I agree that you should go for it! It may not be the most optimal situation, but you will be teaching...and that's what you want to do. If something better comes up you can always back out (as said before)...but deal with that when it comes. In the meantime at least you will have a nice teaching position. I hear you about the health benefits...and that does stink, but again, it does not have to be forever. I am not sure how much money you'll be making, but maybe you could go on healthy NY or something to hold you until something w/ benefits comes along.

Good luck! Let us know what you decide!

This is tough, Kathleen. I'm sure you'll have a better idea after you speak with the principal on Monday. I agree with the other person who said that you can always back out if you find something better. You never know, I got my position the Thursday before school started. Schools never know when someone will decide to leave.

Good luck! I know this has been tough.

Take the job and keep your resume out there. If you get a better offer...then backout of the job.
I agree...I would think that they would understand that you would prefer a more permanent job with benefits at least. My fingers are still crossed for you!!!!

take it and back out if you get something...even if it's in oct/nov!!

don't worry about them. don't stay because you 'feel bad'. they don't care about you, so you need to care about yourself and find the best job for you!

best of luck!

Kat,

Get under your FI's benefits through his job...you can do this since you will be married in the next year...

I would take it....even though it may not be your dream job, the chances of getting a public school position now are slim - and it is a year of experience which counts for ALOT. Good luck!

It is a tough call but then again it is only 3 weeks left til the summer. Getting a job this late on is rare. I would take the job so that you get your foot in the door. Who knows, even if the teacher returns mid year, there might be another opening for another leave replacement! It is good for your resume plus you don't have to go back & deal with your old principal!

Kathleen.. I would take it. Its a job.. its an income, you know?? Its not like you will be there forever. Take it, but continue your search. Talk to the principal & see what happens then. I know you were stressing. Lots of luck!

Kath-

I agree with the ladies that say take it. If something better comes along, then you can always leave. I know benefits are important, but so is having a job. Good luck on Monday. I hope it goes well!

Take the job and if something better is offered later, then leave! One thing I have learned is that I don't owe anyone I work for ANYTHING!!! You have to do whats best for YOU!!
Think of it this way. If you take the job, you have an income but no benefits. If you get a better offer, then leave that job for the better offer.
If you don't take the job, and get no other offers then you still have no benefits AND no income!!

That was exactly what I was going to say!!! My sister taught in a catholic school for the first few years of teaching and LOVED it. She said it was so nice to work in a small school where everyone was really friendly. When she finally landed a public school job, they were sad to see her go but understood that she needed to do what was best for her. To this day she says if she didn't need to make more money she would have stayed there for good because she liked it so much. Take this job and if something better comes along, go for it. As my dear old mother would say... Remember, a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush!

Good Luck~

You should take it--At least you will have a steady job to go to everday. So if it is between subbing and teaching--they both don't offer benefits, you should def take the teaching job. Things come up during the year, you never know!!!! What is your degree in??

Take it!!!! My sister took a leave replacement for our school district where we grew up and well, she is now a Kindergardten(sp?) teacher w/tenure
You never know and I feel that even if for some reason it didnt go in that direction, it will be a reason for you to leave that other school and get you out!!!! Everything happens for a reason and I believe this is your calling!
I think you will be happier once out of the current position your in and there will be something there for you if not the position you take.
It happened for my sister, it can happen for you!

Re: I was offered a job...what would you do???

I got my job in late SEPTEMBER, school had started already two years ago. The teacher retired... I know it is a long shot and this doesnt happen often, but things do come up and there could be opportunities out there!

HOWEVER, if I were you I would take the private school job, keep looking for other oppportunities and if something better is offered to you, go for it! They will understand.

Honestly, if there are no benefits, I would pass it up. You don't make much in private school to begin with, and benefits are a lot of $$.
If you already have insurance because you are on someone elses plan it might be okay though.

Kath, I know it is a tough call & it only makes it worse that you know the secretary in the school b/c then it puts you in a bad position IF you do want to back out at the last minute.

Having worked in a Catholic school the last 3 years, I know you are already taking a big paycut from the public school & then not to have any benefits, that is brutal.

Is there a reason why they aren't offering benefits?

Listen to your heart Kath....
