I went to my first florist appointment today and I feel so sick...

I went to my first florist appointment today and I feel so sick...

It was completely overwhelming and took about an hour and a half. I knew what I wanted, but the main flowers were peonies and they aren't in season in July. We went through and decided on garden roses, hydrangeas and green berries as fillers.

I need about 20 centerpieces, some flowers for cocktail tables, 6 bouquets including mine, 2 arrangements for fireplace mantles and 2 church arrangments for $3500.

She was very nice and I think put off by my budget (which was about $2000). We changed my original idea to just hydrangeas in silver pedestal urns for centerpieces. Then she added something about introducting peach into the color scheme with ivy when my colors are pale pink, ivory and a very light green (sage/ honeydew). After this, I stopped listening while she kept talking. I felt horrible but I had no idea my budget wouldn't be met and I picked out simple low arrangements. I am quite overwhelmed and confused.

Don't feel bad, where did you go? There are other florists you can work with

Pedestals. She was very nice, I just didn't even know how to respond. I was so set on my scheme and my idea of what I wanted.

Plus, my venue is a mansion owned by Suffolk and everything is not perfect but that is the idea. The place is 200 years old. She kept pointing out imperfections when that is why it is a landmark building and making it seem like we had to do things to cover them up. It really made me feel bad about where we are having our wedding.

Awww, please look into some other florists...I recommend Burton's...email them ([email protected]) and tell them your ideas and exactly how many cp's, bo-k's, etc and they'll email you a quote....you deserve what you wanted from day 1 and you'll find it!

Ok, well Pedestals is fantastic, but there are other florists that will work with you. From reviews I've read, check out Flower Michele and Designs by Rose (I think that's the name). There are plenty of places that can get the flowers you want and in your budget.

Thanks. I know that I can't have exactly what I want because the flowers are out of season, but I don't expect someone to completely change my vision. I really didn't want traditional roses because I wanted much bigger buds- fluffy and light. I love roses too, but for this I wanted something different. I am willing to give other places a try so I can find someone who understands my vision. I also hope that they aren't so pricey.

FH told me he stopped listening half way through and he doesn't think he can sit through another appointment. He doesn't care and just wants me to have what I want. Maybe I'll bring FSIL this time!

You definitely need to go to other florists then. You'll find someone that can work with what you envisioned. Don't be upset, no one said wedding planning was easy! Sometimes we find things right away, other times we need to keep looking. I plan to check out National Floral in Baldwin. From what I've read they are cheap and good but you need to be super specific in your contract. Even though the flowers you want aren't in season, doesn't mean you can't get them cheaper from a different florist

Thanks. I don't have to have exactly what I wanted, but I want to stick with the types of blooms and original color scheme. I know this woman was only helping, but it really turned me off. I am going to Flower Michele on Thursday. Hopefully this gets easier.

Thanks for the advice and support.

Re: I went to my first florist appointment today and I feel so sick...

hi. flowers really stressed me out too....who knew they could be so expensive! i'm also using peonies but thankfully they are in season in may. even so, it's not like your wedding is in november so they shouldn't be too much more expensive.

pedestals was great but their price was outrageous--several hundred dollars more than Flower Michele and several several hundred dollars more than Burtons. when we were in pedestals, i remember my heart sunk when she showed us the price. we ended up booking with FM b/c we really liked john and thought he'd do a great job--plus he knew like every sort of peony that exists!

it will get easier...... :)

also, i found it helpful to make a list of all the flowers i want (since i have a specific 'vision' and sounds like you do too) and with the list, attach pictures of ideas from the web. when we met with john he told us we made it really easy on him b/c of this!

good luck! you will find what you want for your budget!

I'm so sorry you went through that! Hang in there... it will get better! And you should have the vision that you wanted on your day, it is your wedding... not hers!

I am going to meet with John on Thursday. Hopefully he is able to see my vision better. Today I brought many pictures of flowers and lists of flowers I would like and that are in season, even if peonies are not. The vision kept getting shifted until at the end it was no longer what I saw. She said she would make 2 centerpieces- 1 of the lower end flowers and 1 of the higher end so that I could see the difference, but I already had. I couldn't listen anymore. Don't get me wrong. She was extremely nice and wanted to help me, but I am not sure she was understanding what I asked for even though I had pictures and even drew sketches.

If it helps keep costs lower, you can cut out the cocktail hour flowers....I don't think people will really realize that they're not there since everyone will be mingling and getting up to get (more) food.

Thanks and I know it will get better. This is my last big vendor and I was putting it off because I was starting not to feel so stressed.

Oh Jess - I'm sorry it was a bad experience.

I think for your next appointment, definitely bring example pics and know your color scheme. I also think you should tell them your budget beforehand and tell them that you have to stick to it.

If what you want doesn't fit within your budget, most florists should be able to recommend cheaper options that wont compromise your vision.

Good luck. We booked with Flower Michele and I found John to be super accommodating and reassuring.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me!

Re: I went to my first florist appointment today and I feel so sick...

The fact that she made you feel bad about where you are having your wedding bothers me more but I still don't like that she wanted to change your whole vision. I mean its great to have someone who knows what they're doing and can recommend other options that might work better but it shouldn't be in a way that makes you feel like your idea is being completely ignored. And you never made it sound like your venue needed 'covering up.' I'm sorry you had a bad experience. I really worried about florists myself because I have no idea what kind of budget I will need...I only need bouquets and flowers for ceremony (corsages, etc.) but I'm still clueless about prices. I think the flowers are the things I'm most confused about haha. Good luck! I'm sure plenty of girls on this site can recommend places that they've used. You will figure it out!

Thanks so much. I heard John was wonderful and I look forward to meeting with him. This whole thing is amusing because FH was also overwhelmed and he told me just to book with Pedestals and get it overwith so we didn't have to meet with anyone else!
