My neighbor is Christening her daughter soon and DH and I were invited. We really want to get them a nice gift because we weren't invited to the shower and haven't been able to get something for the baby yet. Her registry was wiped clean by the time we got back from our HM. She is ALWAYS bringing me little gifts... she is just SO thoughtful so we really want to get them something nice. Just today she brought me a little house plant as a 'first mother's day' gift! She is just too sweet!!
Any ideas or suggestions? We'd like to be able to spend more but I'm hoping to be able to get them (the baby) something nice for around $200.

Personally, if that's what you're willing to spend, I'd get a $400 savings bond. I'm sure the baby is getting a special cross, and I don;t know if they 'need' anything, but I'd get the bond.

I think the savings bond is a great idea....but what about a personalized wooden toy chest....they will grow with it for many years to come!

Def. what I would get. As a mom I would REALLY appreciate that over anything else I think and it is MORE then generous of you!!!

Also if you want to get a savingsbond for $250 or $300 and then get something else Things Remembered has a whole baby section for baby/christening events that can be personalized. Some of the stuff was really nice!

I would go with a bond and maybe a gift certificate to a potrait place so that can get nice pictures taken. You could spend $100 on the bond (for a $200 bond) and then get a $100 g.c. to a picture place. I know I would have really liked something like that and it is something that they will treasure forever.

Savings Bonds are actually NOT such a good idea these days....the thinking being that say you buy a $250 bond ....in 18 years when that thing matures...$250 will probably buy next to nothing.....The $125 that you pay for it will probably buy more now than the $250 will buy later, and that way they can put the money into whatever account for the child they want.

Yes but the bonds can continue to gain interest past the 18 year mark and can be worth more money over time. DH had about $1,000 in bonds that he got at his Christening 30 years ago that are now worth A LOT more money than $1,000. And personally I think that $250 will still be a lot of money in 18 years. Especially when you combine a bunch of bonds together. It's a nice little chunk of change to come into.

the bank will give you a little paper to fill out that you can put in a card for the baby.
The actual bond will get mailed to the babies house...so make sure you bring the address with you to the bank

Actually it depends on the market and interest rates...they will mature but with pratically no interest if the interest rates are low and vise versa...so who knows, maybe it is better to just give cash or buy a gift?

I would go to Tri- County they have a stand there its on the main floor by the food. Where they personalize everything from rocking chairs to toy chests and they aren't very expensive e ither you can get a nice toy chest for about $100 maybe even less. I would get something like that and then a few outfits and a gift certificate to Babies R Us for formula and diapers or even go and buy that as well and put it all in the toy chest.
