If a friend gave you something that you already have...
A pretty good friend of mine, who is not in the bridal party, just stopped by to give me part of our wedding gift. It's a very pretty plate and wine glass for Shabbat (Friday nights). Problem is, we already have another plate and wine glass for this occassion and I like the one we had initially better. It came with a gift receipt, but I feel like I should let her know if I exchange it b/c we're good friends. Would you tell the person or just go ahead and do it? I don't want to hurt her feelings but I don't want to get 'caught' not having it anymore if she comes over! TIA!

Is this the type of thing that you could store away and possibly use one day> If not, I would return it. You could either be honest and tell her that you have one(that is very special to you), or you could say that it was chipped or something and so you returned it. Or you could say both...good luck! it's tricky sometimes, but think about it this way...you want the person to be happy with a gift you give them, so if they can't use it, they should replace it with something they will use.

just tell her. i'm sure she'll appreciate it more than doing it behind her back.

I would be honest because what if she asks one day while she's over and then you'll feel dumb for not say anything to her in the first place. My good friend got FH and I champagne glasses when we got engaged, I loved them, but I already had a set that I really like that FMIL gave us. I was honest with my friend and told her that I got something else from my registry with the credit I had. She was happy that I got something I could use instead of just keeping it for the sake of.
