If his family doesn't leave us alone, there may not be a wedding! :(

Original post by aliasPook

Ok, so maybe my favors were a wee bit 'unsual'~but they seem to have caused major problems among BRian's family. She told me she hated them from teh day I should her teh proofer. Oh well...IT'S OUR WEDDING...

We have been engaged since March 2002, and we, well, I...ok, DAWNIE and I, have done all of the planning and Brian and I have done all of the paying.

Let me add that my parents have never met her for more that 15 minutes accumulative over 6 years...My parents called her numerous times when we first got engaged, and she never returned their call. My mother was very hurt by all of this, but never said anythign to BRian, other than oh, did your mother get my calls? His motehr was like oh, I wante dto wait until THIS SUMMER (2003) to call, so we coudl bar b q or something...It's been a year and a half, still waiting for her call.

SO maybe she wasn't thrilled that I was havign it in February~but WE ARE HAVING 300 PEOPLE! WE COULD NOT AFFORD A SATURDAY NIGHT WEDDING IN JUNE! I'm sorry, we just couldn't. So we settled on an off month and she wasn't thrilled at first... she got used to the idea.

ALmost everyday, I email her with planning updates, what I have bought, what we are planning, and the costs. Not once did she offer to help us pay, not until she decided that she wanted a martini bar and a wok station at John ANthony's. I'm sorry, Martini's are included in the price, I am not goign to have them charge me extra to set up an extra station for martinis just beacsue her boyfriend's rich sister and brotehr in law had one at there wedding...
THIS IS OUR WEDDING, no one elses! Ok, I would settle for the wok station and maybe teh caviar station (I would eat from there, probably not many of my friends though), but I really didn't need this extra stuff. If she wanted to pay for it, fine. I was not complaining...

Months pass, and Brian and I didn't hear about her payign for anythign until I brought up the rehearsal dinner. Now, we never expected her to pay for this. We budgeted enough to cover it, and we weren't about to ask her for any money.
I suggested places, she suggested places...she is paying for it, she can have it in a library for all I care. Teh RHD is one thing, our wedding is a totally different affair as far as I am concerned...

Invitations~SIMPLICITY PLANNING called me to confirm the proofer, you haev two weeks to do so...I called her and emailed her becasue I wanted to fax her teh wording, and she never replied so I just sent it in and had her and her ex's name on there. Teh ex is BRian's father. Brian and him have a very close relationship, tehy speak almost every day. I am sorry if you hate him, but you married him and had Brian and I tried to ask you if my wording was ok, but you never replied so I had it printed and that was that...I knwo she passed a comment beacsue his sister mentioned somethign to me, but I shoudn't have to wait and wait and wait for an answer, I had to place teh order and it was grammatically correct and once again, IT IS OUR WEDDING!!!

18 months have passed. I ordered my favors. I'm sorry if they are not classy enough for you and your friends, but Brian and I are also donating $1000 to eitehr Memorial SLoan Kettering or NY-Prespyterian Hospital and I think that shows more class than if I used paper plates on my table.
SO instead of consulting me, Brian's aunt (who I really really liked up until lately when she blows up and starts screaming at me for no reason~Brian says she is liek taht with everyone, so I guess she is finally comfortable with me) picks up two favors for me to decide between...a silevrplated ice cream scoop or a silver plated candle snuffer...

SO I tell her no thank you, it doesn't make sense to have a shot glass taht says I WENT TO BRIAN AND LAURIE'S WEDDING AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS LOUSY SHOTGLASS~and give them an ice cream scoop, does it? I said if you would liek to help, you can give teh donation. Or I now need centerpieces, I owe $2000 on my honeymoon, I need my invitations to be reprinted...I need an additional 25 menu cards...get teh idea?

SO she tells me that if I want to do a donation considering it means so much to me, I should do it privately and not annouce it to my guests...and I should give out the **** ice cream scoop? SO I am liek what should I do with teh glasses? She tells me to put one at each place setting...uh, no.

(Chorus)

IT'S OUR WEDDING!!!!!!!

Ok, so I go online and pull up all of these things on donations. They, unfortunately, were all in memory of a person who has already passed. HIs aunt is like if you notice, teh peopel that they are giving these in memory of have all died... ok, so now I get P I SS ED ...

My grandfather died of cancer, my grandmotehr died of cancer, my stepfather's father died of cancer, my friend died of cancer last week (28 years old, he had a brain tumor), your mother (Brian's grandmother) died of cancer...

My father has cancer, my sister has cancer, my uncle has cancer...they are alive and it's for research that we want to support! I tell her this. I also tell her taht donations are very in lieu of favors, and (beacsue tehy know JILLNBRAD)
I mention that they might be doing it too.

SHE FREAKED~she starts screaming that I am calling her insnsitive, that I won't let her and BRian's motehr be apart of this wedding...blah, blah, blah.... it annoys teh **** out of me beacsue I have always liked Mary and may times I have passed comments to BRian that she is so nice, I wish she were your motehr instead beacsue we get along so well... now her true colors are out...

SO then his mother writes me...

oh, you won;t let me be a part of my sons wedding, you won't let me and mary and lauren and her boyfriend help, this is our day too...I am teh motehr of teh groom...
HOW WOUDL YOUR MOTEHR FEEL IF YOU DIDN'T LET HER BE A PART OF YOUR PLANNING????
I am so hurt, I just wanted to help....I can't believe it's come down to this...it's our day too...I have waited my whole life for this...

...telling me to get new favors beacsue you don't liek mine are NOT a way of helping! I liek them Brian likes them...

....IT'S OUR WEDDING!

So I am in tears at this point. I calmly and calmly write back that I am sorry you feel this way, but helping with our wedding is not, 'If I don't liek what you are doing, let me pay to have it done again so it's teh way I like it...'...

And I brought up teh point that the only problem my motehr has had with this wedding is teh fact taht she never met teh motehr of teh man I am marrying. That she see's is a problem...

I said that I have advised and consulted with you on every decision we have made. We have been engaged for a year and a half and you haev NEVER offered to pay for our favors or anything else unles it's somethign you disapproved of...
She writes me today and is liek we need to sit down and discuss this beacsue all of out feelings have been hurt...WHATEVER....it's a day for all of us... NO, IT IS NOT A DAY FOR ALL OF US. It's our wedding. It's more than havign her pay for it, it's the fact taht we should have just gotten married on the beach somewhere like Brian originally wanted to, and we wouldn't be dealign with all of this. I said to her why can't you just be happy that we love eachotehr instead of worryign about how elegant everything needs to be? IT'S OUR DAY, OUR WEDDING!!!

YOU NEED TO STOP TALKING TO HER!!!!!!!!!!!

That will ease a lot of tension. As soon as I brought my mother and my FMIL into the picture, things just started getting complicated. Then finally through a lot of help from the girls on this board, was able to tell my mom to just be suprised with the fine detail. As far as my FMIL.. thats another story!!!! Hang in there.. It will be over before you know it and the last month is the most stressful!!!! Go get a massage, or a manicure/ pedicure!!!!!!

2003Oct10 is right! Nobody wanted to have anything to do with the wedding before and now they are all driving me crazy to the point that i want to cry every day. So it will only get worse if you don't stop it now! Seriously go treat yourself to a day of pampering..it helped me alot! Made me feel better even if it was only till the next phone call from one of them. Take alot of deep breaths and try to calm down!

Hi. I usually don't respond, but, I have to tell you that your future mother in law and my mother in law must have come from the same mold. My wedding was Aug 31st and I had similar problems with my mother in law. She has 3 boys and feels slighted that we didn't include her when planning OUR WEDDING. Ugh, she has caused so much grief that both myself and my mother spent days crying (out of frustration- nothing else) about how rude my husband's mother is. She had the nerve to call my sister and say 'thanks for being nice to me and my family at your sister's wedding.' She neglected to apologize for being 20 minutes late to her son's wedding and because of her tardiness, the priest left in the middle and the ceremony was completed by the rabbi. This really hurt my mom and I and to be honest, I don't think I can ever forgive her. I could go on forever. Wait till she finds out that I will be picking the photos in her album, NOT her- this will cause some controversy. Feel free to vent. Also, don't let everyone get to you, as hard as it is, IGNORE them, act like the don't exist and everything will work out in the end!
Good luck!

Laurie,

You have to try and really things through... I know you are having a tough time with Brian's family right now, but would that really make you say that you don't know if you want to marry him? Also, I read two different posts and you said it twice... is there more to this that is really bothering you?? (I've been through this before and I know that I used to say stuff like that to one of my close friends... I always used to say to her that I don't think this is going to work -and- I'm not going to marry this guy -- and I didn't). Although, I can understand completely how you would question the relationship and marriage at this point in time because of the whole situation with his mother. You just need to ask yourself (honestly) if this is the only problem... By the way, I think that's a great favor idea You are right, this is your wedding day... not anyone else's... try to talk with your FI when you both calm down and come to a mutual understanding that no one else should be involved...(even if they are family)

I hope all works out with you father and sister.

I think having a 'talk' with the FMIL sounds like a good idea. Maybe getting things off your chest will help you feel better and maybe she will miraculously understand. I just wish you all the best.

Brian needs to sit his mom and aunt down and explain what it means to HELP and what it means to CRITICIZE. They are doing the latter and not much of the former. If they don't like the favors, then they don't have to take one home. Yes they are a part of the wedding but not to make decisions FOR YOU. But seems like they are criticizing YOU and not Brian.....what's up with that? He needs to talk to them. As for the martini and wok station, it's all nice and whatnot but like you said the martinis can be made at the bar (how many really drink those anyway) and the wok station....up to you really. But why don't they understand that they can't be making all these 'do this ' and 'do that' suggestions that will cost more money if they aren't willing to put their money where their mouth is? It's not fair to you or Brian. So I hope he talks to them, from what you write you TOTALLY don't need this added stress and I hope that it all workss out in the end

Re: If his family doesn't leave us alone, there may not be a wedding! :(

I understand what you are all saying, but this is a never ending battle between him and I. There is really not much else we fight about. He is my best friend, I love him to death, when he calls, I still feel all happy inside just liek I did six years ago. He is the sweetest thing.

We had broken up in the past for 4 months mainly because of them. This is really our only problem. Anyone can say that you are marrying him, not his family, but it's not that easy. One of our closest frind's wives spent the first two years of their marriage crying almost daily beacsue whather motehr and law and sister in laws. I don't want it to be like that. I love him so much, but if I am goign to have to deal with all of the nasty comments and undermining things that his mother says to me and about me, we are not going to lead a happy life. If he doesn't defend me to them now, he never will. I can't imagine living that way.

It's not that I don't want to marry him, I just know that we will lead a very unhappy life if he doesn't put a stop to this now. I am so hurt by his family~all I ever do is try to help his sister and I try to hard to get a long with his motehr and his aunt, and always wind up feeling liek I was just slapped across teh face. I can only imagine what tehy say behind my back thinking about all of the things she says to my face. Only ONCE in six years did Brian ever say anything to my defense otehr than, 'ENOUGH mom...'...you have to hear her talk about him to otehr people. I want to cry. SHe is liek he's lazy, he's just liek his father, you two will leed a miserable life together...'
How Sweet....

You are doing and giving way more than some other weddings I have attended. Like I said, I am thinkin gof doing the shotglass as well becuase I collect them. I guess in your fmil I am not too high class either. Tell her I am insulted!

Re: If his family doesn't leave us alone, there may not be a wedding! :( Updated

Ok, so I am better today and now I remembered why we are gettign married. After all of teh horrible things I said to him last night, (and believe me, they were horrible...) he called me like he does every mornign when I am not there to make sure I got off to work ok. He totally acted liek we never got in to a fight, and added that he miised me consodering I haven't seen him since Sunday. He made me call him as soon as I got in to the office, and them finally after we were both calm, he through in a, 'Are you feelign better today?' meaning, 'Are you still mad at me?' We never fight beacsue no matter how nasty it gets, he is always teh one to be more mature and drop it so we don't stay mad for long...

As far as his family, , I guess time heals all wounds. I a, going to drop it, and he is really looking forward to Pre Cana. Maybe beacsue it just has something to do with teh wedding~his way of participating in something. So far, he has just stepped back and let me plan away...

Thank you all so much for listening, I think I have so much garbage goign on right now, that his family just picked a very bad time to start with me...

I just want to say I feel for you and you are totally right in this.. You do need to sit down with Brian and tell him calmly how you are feeling, how much this is upsetting you and how much stress this is causing. He needs to tell his mom to MYOB and that Aunt too, who the hell is she to put her two sense in, the nerve of her!!!! She isn't paying for this so she needs to stay out of it and worry about what the hell she is wearing the day of your wedding and not what favors you are having. Do they pull this crap in front of Brian and if so, does he say anything to them?? You definitely need to live far from them. That is why my FI and I are moving from LI to S. Jersey 2 1/2 hrs from his MOM!!!! Yipeeee, cant wait...

Good Luck to you and please DO NOT let your FMIL or that AUNT bother you or get in the way. IGNORE THEM, just YES THEM TO DEATH!!!! IT WORKS!!!!

Well, thats' teh thing. SHe almost never starts in unless I am alone. When BRian is around, she is fine. That's what P's me off even more! And teh things she says about him just makes me hate her even more. It's not that she just says it to me, she says it infront of EVERYONE, neighbors, friends....it's awful! We are better today, and he knows I want to move to LI or to upstate and get as far away from them as possible. I mean, it won't be fair to her when we have kids, but if this keeps up, I might not want to have kids for that reason alone...seriously...

Alias, when she says things to you tell her in a very nice, stern, dont F*** with me voice to say it to her son. That you really dont wnt to hear it.

I did it and it works, Paul now deals with everything with his mom, she doesnt call me anymore and its great.

Re: If his family doesn't leave us alone, there may not be a wedding! :(

Laurie...Never would have thought there was so much DRAMA going on over there.... but let me tell you one thing. FI is the same way except with his Dad.. I mean it;s all about his father and I feel most of the time that he choses him over me and would definelty have his back before mine in some situations, which p i ss es me off. I know he idolizes his father they were the 2 guys in a house full of girls, and I think it's just he needs to grow the sac to say things to him to stand up for himself, but that the father would hate , since he has always had the upper hand. His father has so many comments and suggestions but isn't paying for it either, so I do not even sweat it. I listen but it doesnt mean Im going to do it either. His sister hated the BM dress and told me to my face and I got ****ed but everyone sided with her and not me so I was the outcast. but she's wearing it or she doesnt need to be in the wedding.. Sometimes they call just for rides when they have cars, and don;t wanna drive and he does it and I feel like they USE him all the time but this is how they have been all of his life not just with him but with each other and belive it or not he loves these people. This is what he knows and I try to tell him that some thngs are not as normal as they look, but I also I realize that whether I like it or not I have to deal with these people for the rest of MY LIFE. I don;t let it get to me and realize that it's just not worth me geting upset over people who have issues of their own to deal with. He knows how I feel and I am going to be his wife, so he needs to get that across to all of them, that when they walk all over him, they are walking on me too. Yea sure they can be obnoxious, (sp) but there his family and the only 'real family' he has and he loves them, they are so close, but at the same time so mean to one another its so weird. (no cousins, no aunts or uncles) I mean I guess I have to bite my tongue.. i would never pull him away from them, I wouldnt do that to him, and wouldnt be able to live with myself either. So what I'm saying to you is don't give so much info to her. Be nice but you dont have to be best friends either, and realize that it is his mother, so she did one thing right with her life, otherwise Brian wouldnt be here right? Obviously she has issues of her own, maybe its cause of her x and all those mean things are just how she feels about him. Don't let her ruin this for you. Be the better person, and you'll be the winner at the end, and Brian will see that!! Good luck and see u Sat

Oh i forgot to add, guys are guys and they dont underatnd how women are and why they get upset over certain things, and he probably doesnt want to hear that his mom is being like that either, it puts him in BAD situation. As long as he puts his foot down and stands his ground to her and realizes he is ****ed to , she will back off. Just dont give her reason to hate you.. she'll throw it in his face.

Re: If his family doesn't leave us alone, there may not be a wedding! :(

Nicole~She has hated me from day one. Everything looks so normal from the outside, adn I have tried so hard in the past to get her to accept me, but it just never happened. I must add that now that she has her own boyfriend, she is 70% nicer to me, but she has never really liked me.

I try to keep her advised of our plans because when I didn't, she would always tell his sister that she wasn't included. I was more than happy to have her opinion, maybe she was wrong baout some things, maybe she was right, but I wanted her to know what was going on so she didn't feel excluded. She never offered to help us unless it was something she didn't like.

I don't want him to have problems with his family over me, but if he loves me (which is why we are getting married, right?), he should be able oto stand up to her and not let her treat me the way she does. She shouldn't treat ANYONE the way she treats me...it's really that bad...
