If I knew, then I wouldn't have....

If I knew, then I wouldn't have....

Ricky and I received three HUGE boxes from Bed, Bath and Beyond last night. So - I opened them b/c um, I need to know who they're from right? It turns out that they're from FI's Godparents, and Cousin. I consolidated the three boxes into one, and left it at my house w/my mother.

Fast forward to today, when FMIL calls me and tells me 'You shouldn't have opened those. They're for the shower.'

I responded with 'How do I know they're for the shower if the shower's supposed to be a surprise? I just assumed that they were sent to the house b/c the giver is unable to attend the shower.'

FMIL responds with 'Common sense Christine, she didn't want to haul everything from Long Island for the shower.'

I respond 'The packages were addressed to us, and didn't list a sender.'

FMIL responds with 'Well, they're coming to the shower, so if you wouldn't mind wrapping them up again.'

I respond 'They didn't come wrapped, but I'll wrap our gifts again, and act surprised at my shower.'

W T F did I do wrong???? If you were in my situation would you have opened it or waited?

I def woudl have opened teh gifts....and I don't get it - you were supposed to actually bring your own gifts to the shower with you?????? she never shoudl have shipped them to you if she wanted you to open them at the shower

how were you suppose to know that?

she should have addressed them to your Mom- or had your Mom hide them

normally when some one sends the gift it's b/c they can't come!

You did nothing wrong. I would have done the same thing. So they didn't want to haul it to the shower, but it's okay for your mom to? Weird situation. I would just wrap them up & forget it ever happened. Don't let petty BS bother you now.

I don't think it's 'common sense' to not open a box that is addressed to you. You did what any of us would have done.

I would have opened them as well. It turns out that John was on the hunt for packages before my shower and hid all of them.

The sender should have had them shipped to someone else's house.

common sense would have told me to open them too. i agree with you - you dont know who they are from and i also would have assumed they were from someone who would be unable to attend.

why didnt the godparents send it to someone else other than directly to you and ricky?? like FMIL? another aunt? or friends house?

That was my whole 'argument' or 'defense' - whenever people CAN'T come, they send a gift in their place....

I agree with everyone, they should not have been sent to you to begin with!

Ditto!! And the same goes for my DH. He was hiding packages left and right without me knowing.

How where you supposed to know?

If you didn't open them, how would you have ever thought to bring them to your surprise shower????

I would have opened them also making the same assumption you did, that normally people who can't make the shower are the ones that have gifts shipped to the house.

If they didn't want you to open boxes, they should have forewarned you beforehand.

You definitely didn't do anything wrong! You had no way of knowing. I would definitely have opened them too.

Oh Christine!! They should've sent them to someone else's house then, if they're attending the shower. Of course, you're going to want to open them!!

I have a similar story, the other day we got 3 boxes from BBB but my neighbor took them in since we weren't home. She left them for us the next morning but I didn't have time to open them, while I was at work I decided to leave them wrapped. I'm going to give them to my mom to bring to the shower and open them there.

But I gotta tell ya, if I had gotten them when they first arrived I would've ripped into them w/out even thinking 2x about it!!

Lets see, gifts came addressed to you. You opened them.

Nope, can't see anything wrong with that.

So should you not open any mail until your shower as well?
