Ricky and I received three HUGE boxes from Bed, Bath and Beyond last night. So - I opened them b/c um, I need to know who they're from right? It turns out that they're from FI's Godparents, and Cousin. I consolidated the three boxes into one, and left it at my house w/my mother.
Fast forward to today, when FMIL calls me and tells me 'You shouldn't have opened those. They're for the shower.'
I responded with 'How do I know they're for the shower if the shower's supposed to be a surprise? I just assumed that they were sent to the house b/c the giver is unable to attend the shower.'
FMIL responds with 'Common sense Christine, she didn't want to haul everything from Long Island for the shower.'
I respond 'The packages were addressed to us, and didn't list a sender.'
FMIL responds with 'Well, they're coming to the shower, so if you wouldn't mind wrapping them up again.'
I respond 'They didn't come wrapped, but I'll wrap our gifts again, and act surprised at my shower.'
W T F did I do wrong???? If you were in my situation would you have opened it or waited?

Lets see, gifts came addressed to you. You opened them.
Nope, can't see anything wrong with that.
So should you not open any mail until your shower as well?

I had quite a few things come to the house before the shower ..I opened them all, and didn't bring them to the shower! I htought people meant for them to just be at the house...I think you are okay..I wouldn't worry one bit!

I would've opened them too. I'm not exactly sure what they did, but either my BMs or my mom arranged it with BBB so that all of my shower gifts were sent to my MOH's house (where my shower was held). Maybe you or someone else can arrange with BBB to have your gifts delivered to your parents or to the shower location.

Common sense would have been to ship them to your FMIL address if they did not want you to open it HELLOOOOO !!!

You didn't do anything wrong. It could very well have been someone sending you a gift not for the shower.

how were you suppose to know that?
she should have addressed them to your Mom- or had your Mom hide them
normally when some one sends the gift it's b/c they can't come!
Exactly!

I would have opened it. They should of had it addressed to a family member that was attending the shower-and THEY could have brought it. You did nothing wrong. People just dont think sometimes.

that is the most retarded thing I have EVER heard. EVER EVER EVER.
Please don't feel bad about it...I mean really, were they WALKING from Long Island...I don't think so, so what is the big deal about 'lugging' the gift.
Please Chris, don't stress this for a SECOND! it's THEIR bad, not YOURS!

You totally did nothing wrong-how could you have known? I am sure she is aware that your shower is a surprise for you, so why didn't she tell people to send gifts to her or elsewhere to keep the surprise effect? Plus, I've never heard of anyone sending a gift directly to the bride-to-be beforehand for a shower if they are attending. To make it seem like 'you should have known' is crazy! Okay, I'm getting a little too worked up...Eh, whatever...

Re: If I knew, then I wouldn't have....
If they wanted to have them delivered, they should have delivered it to your mom.
For my FMIL's shower, she got a lot of my presents sent to her and I opened them there.
Why did they send them to you? That's nuts!
I'm so sorry!

You definitely didn't do anything wrong.
Also, were you going to take them with you wherever you go for the next few months since the shower is surprised??? You're not going to know when to bring them with you!

You did nothing wrong. I would have done the same thing. So they didn't want to haul it to the shower, but it's okay for your mom to? Weird situation. I would just wrap them up & forget it ever happened. Don't let petty BS bother you now.
Exactly what i was thinking!!

You did nothing wrong! But for the sake of argument and for the sake of not making them feel bad or cheap at your shower, rewrap them

Oh, I'm sorry Christine..I didnt know they would walk from Long Island to Brooklyn, so they wouldn't have to 'lug' packages...
WHO DOES THIS???!!!!
If I go to a shower, I will bring the gift myself. I will not deliver it to their house...who does this?????
You were NOT in the wrong at ALL here... I would have opened it up too.

Re: If I knew, then I wouldn't have....
People who were invited to my shower who couldnt come either went to the store to buy them to have them shipped elsewhere or waited til after the shower and had them sent to me so the surprise wasnt ruined!
