I find myself really annoyed both other people's kids sometimes. They can really get on my last nerve. It makes me worry that I won't be a good mom, or that I shouldn't have kids.
What do you think?

I hope not, cause it happens to me all the time...
Did you see Sex and the City this week? I was thinking of this when Miranda said she doesn't like any kids other than her own!
I think you have a totally different tolerance level for your own kids.

Karen - I was thinking the same thing last weekend when I had a BBQ and it poured rain and we all got stuck inside. I had 7 children (all under the age of 8) running around and I was going out of my mind. I had a splitting migraine after they all left!
I don't think though that it would make me a bad mom. Your own children will take on so much of a different feeling/meaning for you and I've been told your patience level rises much more with your own.
Just hang in there, you will make a great mom (I tell myself that all the time!)

Re: If other people's children annoy you....
I have that feeling too sometimes. I think it's a combination actually of two things.
1. We're not ready for the responsibility of a child yet.
2. The way that the child's parents discipline them (or lack of!) depending on what the child is doing.
If a kid is screaming his head off, and the parents are right there, I don't understand why the parent doesn't say 'Hey, do you think you could stop yelling?' And i can't stand when a child is trying to ask a parent a question, but the mom/dad won't answer them. Poor kid!
each parent will have a different view of how to raise their child(ren)...I try not to say anything...so that when they say something to me when I have children I can tell them to butt out!! (my SIL and BIL are already doing this to us and we are not even TTC yet!!)

Re: If other people's children annoy you....
OMG I was thinking everything you ladies said.
I was in a store a few weeks ago and the woman had 3 kids and they were screaming and yelling and I was getting extremely fustrated.
Last night I went out to a nice late diner with my FH and it was about 10:30 at night and people had their young (under 5) children out. That drove me up a wall. I wanted a nice glass of wine, peace and quite and an enjoyable late diner (something FI and I have not done in a long time) and having kids around just wasnt settling well with me.
I have no tolerance for other peoples children. If its 10:30 at night and FH and I decided to have a nice romantic diner out I do not want children running around, throwing crayons, and screaming. Its 10:30pm they should be in bed.
I think in time when we are ready to have children my attitude will change, but for now I am easily annoyed by other peoples children

I really adore children, they make me feel all mushy inside BUT --- there are some children that just get on my last nerve - annoying to no end. I blame most of these annoying children's habits on their parents. I see no connection to me being a good mom.

Re: If other people's children annoy you....
The only time kids annoy me is when they're in a wrong place at the wrong time (a 10:30 dinner at a restaurant falls in this category, same goes for an adult movie showing).
Otherwise, if they cry, I just feel bad for the mom, but also feel helpless (how am I supposed to help a stranger's baby on the subway train)

Re: If other people's children annoy you....
What a relief! I'm not the only one!
But to be brutally honest, sometimes even my own neice and nephew annoy me. They have NO set bed time, so they go to bed whenever they feel like it, which means if I'm visiting my sister it turns into more of a babysitting session than time spent with her.
And they have no concept of waiting for adults to finish speaking before they interrupt. You simply can NOT have a conversation that's longer than 3 sentences without them interrupting. I know a lot of that is due to the lack of limits and lack of teaching they're getting, but it still drives me NUTS.
I'm with them every single day while she's at work, and even though I love them very much, I just can't wait for the peace that comes over the house when they're gone for the day. Sometimes I can just feel myself shutting down, almost trying to block them out because it's TOO overwhelming..all the constant attention. You don't get a minute to yourself. (They are 5 and 8).
It makes me feel like a terrible person..

No, don't feel terrible. Trust me, you'll tolerate your own kids way more than others, even your neices and nephews. They are not yours, so of course you don't want them around ALL the time

Re: If other people's children annoy you....
I dont think it means you'd be a bad Mom at all. It's definitely a child rearing issue most of the time - a child behaving how you wouldnt let yours. Or it's a lack of experience issue - once you have your own you see that it's not as simple as that (or so I'm discovering...) I do find since I have a child of my own that I have a higher tolerance for kids 'misbehaving'. I'm not talking about down right brattiness - just that way kids can be that I would have once tolerated but found annoying, I dont even notice anymore.

I'm also glad I'm not the only one who thinks this! Especially because at 15 weeks pregnant, it's a little late to go back!!

We are going to DH's parents's house this year for x-mas where there will be 4 neices and nephews age 3-7....all I'm going to say is there will be much spiked eggnog wherever I am! Love them...but like everything in life...IN MODERATION! Too much whining and running around makes me want to tape them to their chairs!

I don't think it means you will be a bad mom. I think its just that everyone has a different way of raising children. I can't stand kids who control the parents. That makes me sick. I hate seeing kids who misbehave and don't listen to their parents. I have a friend that doesn't correct her child when he is bad and because of it,the kid is really bad. I think it put a wedge between our friendship.

Re: If other people's children annoy you....
I couldn't agree w/Liz more...about a lack of experience issue - once you have your own kids, you do tend to see things MUCH differently and you find yourself saying, 'Now I get it!' or 'I totally feel for that parent....I completely understand how he/she must feel!' The truth is, it's not as simple as people without kids think it is and your tolerance does increase when you have your own child.
That said, I think if a person's intolerance to kids is so severe that they find themselves declining social invitations or allowing friendships to dissolve just to avoid being around kids, than that speaks volumes about a person's willingness to adapt, which is a key ingredient for handling parenthood in the future. Re: If other people's children annoy you....
I don't think that is a detemining factor at all. Yesterday my GF brought her daughter to lunch with us and the way she had her all over the restaurant and was unbearable for me, its as if she had no control over her, you would have thought the child was deaf. She must have said to her like a 1,000 times, turn around and sit down, sit on the chair, eat your food, don't put your head there, put your foot down. I was like, I have to get back to work, I was so embarrassed for her and me.
Then I saw my other GF's nephew yesterday at her home and he is a Taliban that is what they call him b/c he destroys everything. Talk about a child out of control. He was disgusting and rude and out of control, his mom is only 18 so you know that she is still raising herself so what does she know about raising a child. Lord help them
I am not saying Iam going to be the perfect mother, but I know if you teach your child how to behave at home they will not act like that in public. These children are only doing what you allow them to do at home. Its as if they are the parent and what they say go THis is scary, all I could think, was Lord give me guidance when my time comes to do it right. I know when I was raised my mother did not take any mess and neither did my g-ma.
Not all children are bad, this I know, but seeing so much of it, just scares me. What are the parents doing??
