If I am hosting a party, I don't 'expect' people to bring anything, but it's nice if they do. And we never expect alcohol, so I doubt if you bring something other than that, you will be fine!!

NO!!! You can bring anything! I have gone to BB-Q's & made a fruit salad, dips, reg salad. I've also brought soda if I knew I wasn't going to drink.

I don't think you have to bring the booze. Especially if you don't drink. Anything you bring should be fine!

You def. don't have to bring drinks. Maybe some cookies and fruit or other treats.

I NEVER expect anyone to bring something when they come - but hey if they want to and don't drink it would be great if they brought some kind of desert - like cookies or something -

you are not expected to bring anything. That is a personal decision. I never go anywhere empty handed - but some do and that is fine, b/c they are an invited guest. I would bring something you would want to enjoy while you are there!

Re: If you are attending a BBQ and you don't drink alcohol
As the host and hostess for all the family parties, I'm thrilled when someone brings anything but alcohol - we always end up with more beer after a party than we had before!!!
I love it when someone calls to ask me if they can bring something in particular - that way I can make a suggestion like a side dish, dessert, salad, etc. and I don't end up with a refrigerator full of Potato Salad afterwards. I ask the non-cookers to bring chips, rolls, sausage, etc.
When in doubt, its always a good option to bring something that does not have to be served or eaten immediately too - at Christmas, we had about 8 people walk in with Entenmann's cakes, cookies, and assorted pastries, and ended up throwing half away when they didn't get eaten and eventually got stale or spoiled I tried to get people to take goodie plates home, to no avail and was on vacation so I couldn't take them to work.
Also, a hostess gift doesn't have to be edible - I love getting flowers.
