If you don't live with your FH....

Original post by heatherandrichie

Why? Don't answer if its too personal. But I was curious to know why a lot of you don't live with your FH. Is it because of your religion? Money, etc? Here in FL, everyone lives together. Just curious!

My parents are very old fashioned and would never allow it. And anyway, I didn't want to do it because I didn't want to get to comfortable and never take the next step.

that was how my parents were too..
very old fashioned. - old school italian..
but to me, it takes away the 'surprise' of marriage.

We both have old-school parents and grew up with old-fashioned values.

PLUS - we only live 2 miles from each other, and both sets of parents are letting us stay home rent-free until the wedding.

1 more year!

Same here.. except now we bought a house.. so we ARE paying a mortgage.. He's living in it. I wont be until after the wedding just so we can start totally new and fresh after the wedding.. I tink it'll be so exciting if I just wait the few more months.... AND my parents would FLIIIIIIP if i even SAID i wanted to move in.. Oldschool guineas...

Cool, thanks. I was curious! It's so different here. I have NEVER met a couple (in Florida) who didn't live together 1st. Such a difference, huh?

LOL i can completely relate - i have know since i was born, that 'a sicilian daughter ONLY leaves her father's house in a wedding dress or a coffin' - i didnt even go away to school!!

but i HAVE gone against my parents before so i guess if we really wanted to - we would live together but you know what. . . i feel like waiting until after we are married will make it much more meaningful for us!! it will make it an actually major life change instead of just a party ( JMO - dont mean to offend anyone, just my old farty ways of thinking)

A few reasons for us - FH would be for it, but I never wanted to live with someone before marriage, also now that we are scraping to save for the wedding it doesn't make sense to get an apartment and have to furnish it from scratch, pay rent, etc. before we have to.

We're looking forward to getting married and being together, living together, having the big change.

We don't live together right now because I live in Boston (originally from LI) and he lives on LI (moved there to be with me!)
Looking for a job, so when I do move back we will move in together...but my family and his family are both VERY unhappy about that because they are traditional!!!

well im not going to lie its definately for money reasons but its also because I dont know I may be following the 'traditional'route in the sense that after marriage we live together- i dunno? but i cant wait until we do live together!

Same here. Call me old fashioned, but I want to get married out of my parents house. I also want that honeymoon phase once we get married!

Edited for spelling

Well i live with my FI and i'm thankful we moved in together before we got married because we have gone through so much that now we are in the same page and we can't wait for our wedding. I know that if i would of married him first we would be divorce right now. I'm not lying. We have been together for 2years and ahalf and living together for 2 years. Got engage in our 1 year anniversaty.
I respect other girls decisions of not living with there FI.

I was living in the city when we got engaged, so when my lease was up we decided to move in together. You learn alot about someone when you actually live with them. I'm glad we did it and sorted through things that could of potentially been a problem. Now we know that we can totally live together and are so excited for the wedding. BUT..what really helped us...seperate bathrooms. It's a must!

We use to live together but it seems like our relationship was going down hill so we decided to live apart and wait until the wedding and since then it has been back on track. I am a very spiritual person and I do feel like it's better now b/c we are watiing for marriage.

I dont do it because I find it offensive to my parents, who dont believe in living together before marriage. Not because of money and not neccessarly religion. I also dont see the need to rush that just yet, I am finishing school so I might as well stay home with mom and dad and save some money...also I want it to be more special when we actually get married and live together.

I am not living with my FH for the exact same reason!

I live in my own place -- he's at home with parents.... so it would make sense for him to move in-- but his home is closer to his work and he also has a dog (the boxer to the left) that isn't permitted in my coop. How can he leave his princess? I swear he loves her more than me!!!
but he will have to leave her for a little while after we get married -- before we buy a house

Also-- we are both looking foward to that special feeling after we get married and get to start our life together --including living together full time

Well, for us, money is a huge factor. We're paying for the large majority of the wedding ourselves and to add on rent would be too much at this point. We are both saving a ton living at home for now.

Secondly (and this is more FH thing than mine) but we feel that living together before takes away some of the excitment of that new life together. JMO!!!

I know so many people think you should live together before to find out all of the 'querks' but that's just not us.

Re: If you don't live with your FH....

We don't live together for many of the resons already stated. We are saving for a house and both currently live rent free. I also come from a very Italian family, with an old-school father. We only live 5 minutes away from each other. Mostly, we are also old fashioned and believe that getting married and then living together is more special- for us. I can't wait to start the new chapter of my life, with us getting used to each other's different ways. We think it's more special to wait until we make that true, lifelong commitment. Then living together will be more meaningful for us. I have plenty of friends who live with their bf's, and that's fine, I would never judge them, it's just not right for me.

I don't live with my FH because we want to save money.

my fh and I don't live together because my parents wouldn't approve.

I honestly don't sleep with FH b/c of my religion so that's the other reason.
