If you had to choose between paying for your wedding or buying a house (or a down payment on a house), which would you chose?
What's your gut instinct?

The wedding, I have waited for so long for it. After we have it, we are definitely focusing on saving for a house. JMO.

House. I need shelter more than a pig in a blanket but it would be a heart-wrenching choice!!! Fortunately it is not a choice I need to make.

Re: If you had to choose one...
The House (now that the wedding is over of course ) I don't think I would have answered that way a year ago though. A wedding and all the hoopla that went into it was worth it to me. But I also looked at it as one day and did everything in my power to keep the costs down - getting married in January helped that (along with some very good bargin purchases). But bottom line is it cost a lost of money (even without the expensive honeymoon to Africa) and you need to figure out what is important for your life. Some people HAVE to get married on a Saturday night or in October or whatever - I wasn't picky about what time of year (and some other things) I had it so I feel justified in spending all that money on one day. But looking back, it would have been nice to own a piece of equity right now instead of scrounging up every dollar into my savings account.

Re: If you had to choose one...
STUPIDLY, we chose the wedding. My parents gave us a set amount of money, which would have been a great downpayment on a house, and they said choose between the wedding or a downpayment. I kick myself repeatedly for choosing the wedding. We could have had a house AND smaller, yet still beautiful wedding. Live and learn is all I can say at this point.

A house. You can have a perfectly beautiful, elegant, fun, and--most important--meaningful wedding even if you aren't spending a ton of money. It's a tough decision, though...good luck!

House! I was not the type to dream of a wedding when I was younger. It was four hours of my life--the vows are what is important to me. Unfortunately even having two times what I spend on the wedding saved we will only afforded 20% down on a condo..

The House (I probably chose that because the wedding is over)
We paid for the wedding ourselves and we could have used the money for a house but at that time in our life we weren't looking for a house, we are very happy with the decision we chose to make by having the wedding.

Me neither, I'm sort of indifferent to wedding planning. We'd still have the church ceremony, that's what's important for us, but 4 hours of my life and no place to call home?
I'm having a tough time reconciling myself to the expense of a reception and the hoopla that accompanies it.

Like everyone else, now that the wedding is over and we spent way too much on it and are buying a house, I would say the House. But I wouldn't have wanted to do my wedding any other way, so I guess it's a catch 22.

I felt the same way. It was nice for our union to be recognized in front of our friends and family, but I just don't think anyone would have cared had there been pipers playing as we made our entrance, or a $500 centerpiece instead of a $50 centerpiece. And ours was even a small wedding--I know yours will be much larger. Just looking at it in monetary terms, I did recoup much of what I spent on the wedding itself, but that all could have gone as a larger downpayment on a home...

Re: If you had to choose one...
I will never regret the wedding. I always dreamed of a wedding, but was in no rush to get a house. I would have had no problem renting for a few years and saving before buying a house. However, it worked out that we could afford both.
I think it is a really personal decision. Good luck.

Re: If you had to choose one...
We paid for EVERYTHING ourselves, since our parents are not around to help and I would definitely choose house. I also was not someone who had been planning my wedding all my life and I wanted something very small, like immediate family and then dinner at a restaurant. DH wanted the wedding. Since it was important to him, I agreed to do the bigger wedding. In retrospect, it was a lot of fun and we did make back a lot of our money in gifts, but if I had to make a decision, I definitely would put the $ toward the house and not even think twice about it.

We choose the wedding and I don't regret it for a minute. DH on the other hand, has some doubts but when it comes down to it, he wouldn't trade our day for anything.

I think the wedding, b/c we dont' necessarily need to move into a house right now.
I was much less of a commitment-phobe with DH than I am with other aspects of my life
We were going to use about half our savings for the wedding, but my parents wouldn't take no for an answer, so we didnt' have to & we still don'thave enough $ fora house anyway, so I'm glad we at least had the wedding.

Re: If you had to choose one...
If it was me(Bri will verify this) I would take the money. I believe Bri should have nothing but the best, and deserves her fairytale wedding. So thats what she's going to get. Thats just the way it is. To me she's the best thing since slice bread, so I'm not going to stop her from having her dream wedding.
