If you have a dog...

Did your puppy have alot of accidents in the beginning? How long does it take them to get trained usually to go in the right place? Thanks!

Not to scare you , but male pugs are some of the hardest dogs to train.... I dunno why.

It took frankie (my pug) about three weeks to 'get it' on the wee wee pad...he went outside pretty easily after that. He is not fixed, so he still has minor 'accidents' sometimes.

Thanks! I'll keep training him.

They can take up to a year to be 100% accident free. The best thing to do is take him outside as much as possible so he gets the feeling that grass equals going #1 and #2. Crate training might work well too.

oh...and my parents say to stick with dry food....so that in case the little guy poops, it's easy to pick up

I'm loving the dry food.

Re: If you have a dog...

it depends on the breed actually....it took our dog at least 1 full month to be paper trained, and more time to get her to go outside with no accidents. We started training her at 6 weeks old.

Re: If you have a dog...

she's 5 months now- and she is 99% accident free.
although my dog will probably always be paper trained as she is so small and cannot walk in snow.
but when I do walk her she goes outside.
inside she goes on the puppy pads.

sometimes though puppies do real well & then relapse for a little bit.

Re: If you have a dog...

My dog was a complete nightmare to train. I got her when she was 6 months old and up until then she wasn't really being trained. My friend had bought her and his parents didn't want a dog, so he kept her in her crate, put her in his car, passed her off to friends and then kept her in the kennel for a month before I took her in. Needless to say, she didn't even respond to her own name when I got her. She can't be put in her crate because she howls relentlessly the entire time she's in it. She would go #1 and #2 wherever and whenever she wanted. Eventually she started learning to go outside, but it took about a year. She will still go in the house if she's left alone too long just to be a b!tch because she's more than capable of holding it and will even bark and go to the door when she wants to go out. By the way, my dog is a female husky, Natasha.

We have two pugs who are two years old.

THEY HAD MANY MANY MANY ACCIDENTS in the beginning!!!!!

It was so bad that we hired a trainer, and what a world of difference!!!

Re: If you have a dog...

mine ahad A LOT of accidents, and it is very normal and frustrating!!!!!
It took a good month or so for him to really get used to it, now he does really weel. He only had one accident just 2 weeks aog, but that was our fault. He was scratching and crying to get outside, and I thought it was because hubby was doing something and wanted him to stay in, so we closed the door, and he cried and cried, and he pooped on the floor
He was telling us he needed to go out.
Be very patient

Re: If you have a dog...

Depends on the breed and the dog. My bichon frise took a long time to go outside, as did my Italian Greyhound, but I got them as older pups. Rascal, my rat terrier, just had to hear me say 'no' once or twice and he was trained. They're some of the most frustrating days of dog ownership. Good luck.

my pug is 6 months old and he still has not gotten it yet. He does outside but he still has accidents all the time Hopefully he will get this soon or elsoe we'll have to get a professional trainer.

Re: If you have a dog...

It really depends on the breed, the personality of the dog, and how well you stick to a schedule/routine for the dog. I had a Chow/Huskie mix a while back that I trained in two weeks. FH's BullMastiff -- that's a whole other story!!!! She is going to be three in September and she still leaves 'spite poops' in the house. She's trained, she's just spiteful!!

Good luck -- this is a very difficult task somtimes!! Stick with it though because the rewards are so worth it!
