My parents are paying for my reception (they are great!) and they want to come with us when we pick our menu. I think they should be there, but FH was surprised when I told him they were coming. They should be there, right?

I think it's a good idea to have a few different opinions when it comes to the menu. I know that for me, my FI and I are picky eaters, and it will help to have my parents there, who will try things that I know most people like.

Even if they werent paying for the reception, plenty of brides bring both sets of parents if the hall will allow it.

My parents are paying for the reception and I brought them to the tasting and they liked all the choices I made but I would have definately taken their opinions into consideration if there were differences.

I think that sounds fair.

It's really up to you and your FH, having a few opnions is always a good idea. I have the menu from my place and ask both sets of parents for imput, but only Mike and I will go on the final day.

My FIL'S arent paying for our reception and we brought them to our tasting. They werent there to pick our menu but help us decide on certain things... also fh's family makes up most the people who will be at the wedding and his parents know what everyone will like more then anyone. FH and I are also alergic to seafood and we needed people there who could eat it for us and tell us how it was!!

My parents expressed their wish to do this with us since we booked the hall, and now FH is 'surprised' that they are coming. I wonder if he is offended that we didn't ask his parents.
I don't know if we should ask his parents to go. My parents have done so much with this wedding. Reception, band, invitations, favors, my gown and just endless support. His parents have been supportive and excited, but not really helping financially.
My invitation was supposed to be issued from my parents (the hosts) but FH's mother made a stink about how we are both equally good families and should both have the honour of inviting people to the wedding. My mother made that concession and the invitation was issued by both. But now I feel like I want my parents to have the honor of coming with us to pick the menu without FH's parents coming because everything 'should be equal'. Money isn't everything, but when you are paying for a wedding reception, I think you should have the right to decide the menu with the bride and groom and not share it with the parents who aren't.
Am I being mean and snotty?

I think it would be nice if they went, especially its good for more opinions. I went last week and it was FH. me and my parents. They have helped us out with some of the wedding and I really wanted my moms opinion on what were good selections so we had a good assortment of everything for the guests.

I don't think you are being mean and snotty at all. I think your parents were generous to concede to the invitation from both families. I am sure I am going to have that same issue and have a hard time telling my parents (who are spending $$$$$$$) that they are not the only hosts. Anyway, my cousin is getting married soon and I thought what they did was a nice compromise. They brought the menus to both parents and asked for their preferences. Then they took both sides into consideration and chose themselves. You could do this with his parents, let them know that you are only asking for opinions, and then bring your parents with you so that they feel more involved. At least then his parents will think they had a say. Hope that doesn't sound underhanded!

My parents are paying for the reception and I think my dad will probably be calling most of the shots when it comes to the menu. Since he used to be a maitre'd he thinks he knows everything. I let him think he's planning the menu, but if he wants something FH and I don't, we will have to pull an 'it's our wedding.' I don't expect it to be a problem though. I think he'll do a good job and probably pick everything I want anyway.

You aren't being snotty at all. I feel that because your parents - and your parents only - are paying for the reception, they should be honored by being invited to help pick out the menu.

I'm a little confused. We had a tasting to which brought my parents (his live in Iowa)and then we will pick the menu at a later date. Are you talking about the tasting or actually the final pick. Do you try the food on the day you pick the menu? If there is a seperate tasting I would invite both. I don't see the harm in that. You can alway give the menu to both sets of parent to look over and give opinions, without actually having both come to do the final menu.

No, there isn't a tasting. This is the final menu meeting where we pic the cake, the linens and the menu.
I intend on showing the menu to FH's parents again so they can tell us what they find appetizing, but I don't want too many people at this meeting. FH's mother is a great woman but we have distinctly different tastes and I don't want to get into an argument with her about table linens or the style of cake.
I just didn't like the way FH seemed 'surprised' by my parents going...

I just showed my parents the menu and had them point out stuff they might like. Then we picked somethat we'd like. But they didn't come with us. But we didn't have any tastings, so thats why they didn't come.
ETA- we did ask them if they wanted to come, but they said no. they live in the city though.

My parents are paying for the reception and of course I asked them to come - we did the menu this past Monday night. Not only did I think they deserved to come, but I wanted them there because I wanted their opinions. My FH may have thought it was strange but didn't object at all. My parents didn't dictate the menu though, they let me make the ultimate choices. Every family's relationship is different though - I am very close to my parents so maybe that also weighed in.

I am bringing my mom. She paid for the cocktail hour and has been helping me with everything so I want her help with that too. His parents havent helped at all nor have they given any emotional support, so they arent to help with the menu.
Edited for clarificatiion.

We are meeting with the hall on Saturday to pick the menu... And my parents are coming with us. Partly because they are paying for the reception and partly because they attended a tasting and actually know what the food is like! (FH and I couldn't go b/c we were not in NY).

I guess I will just have to wait and see what FH says. If he asks if his parents can come, I will ask my mom how she feels.

i agree with you...and if they cant go with you then show them the menu options....just so you know what it is they prefer...
