If you work at a camp or have worked at a camp..

Did you get any sort of break??

I work at one from 8-4:30 and get no break whatsoever

That is crazy?!?! When I worked at a camp I think we at least got lunch free from the little kiddies!

I used to work at a camp and we used to take turns taking breaks (me and 2 other counselors) when the kids were at an activity.

Nope. No breaks. I worked in two camps and I never got a break. One of the camps I worked with older kids (7-9thgrade) so it was a little easier to relax at times, but in the other camp I had a group of 24 five and 6 year old boys, and never stopped running around the entire day.
Thats just the way camps work.

I work there but took 2 days off this week...at best we take turns going to the bathroom and thats it..

Its a Science Camp that is out of Wantagh Park

I worked at a camp for years, and I worked with the preschool group. No breaks, and bathroom breaks were usually during nap time. Believe me, nap time was not fun... A bunch of 3 and 4 year olds who do not want to sleep but have to sit quietly for at least 45 minutes is asking for trouble!! But I think nap time is required by all preschools.

Kathleen, it is against the law for you to work more than 5 hours without at least one half hour break, even if it is unpaid.

you should also be given at least one 15-mintue break if you day is 8 hours long. if you need a break, take it, and encourage those around you to do the same. if they question you, tell them to look up the labor laws.

FH works 8-4, and the only break he gets is lunch, with the kids. It's not really a break, because he still has to supervise the kids while they eat! He doesn't pay for his lunch though.

Somehow, camps seem to be able to evade these laws. There must be some kind of loophole.
