If your catholic and getting married on a holiday...

Just some info. for you that i found out after I booked. I am booked for Memorial Day(Monday)of next year well as alot of you already know I was told by St. Kilians that wedding services were only preformed on FRI, SAT, and SUN. So we started looking outside the catholic church and alot of girls gave me ideas. Well I called my hall and told them that I was having a really hard time finding a church to marry us and I didn't want to get married in the hall(JMF) I was alittle upset because this was a specific question I asked when we went to book and she assured me that girls get married at catholic churches on holidays all the time that it wouldn't be a problem!! So anyway when I told her she said that she never heard of such a thing and asked in the hall and the other BM had girls getting married in catholic church on thurs. and on monday. So I asked her for a list of these churches. Well I called four churches today and each one told me absolutely not, St. Kilians makes 5. I was also told by a few episcopal and luthern churches no because it was a holiday So needless to say if the episcopal church Im waiting on tells me no I have to change my date and my total goes up $5000. I just thought that this might be useful info. for someone thinking of getting married on a holiday and if there is anyone out there that can prove me wrong with the catholic church please do. Please FM the name of one that will marry you on a monday before I change my date. The receptionist at the church Im waiting for an appt. wont even give me any information or let me speak to the preist until she receives my application for marriage back in the mail because setting the date before speaking to the preist was wrong she told me!!

I went to Catholic school for 12 years and taught in one for 4. Never have I ever heard of a Catholic hurch performing a wedding on any day except Friday (after 3), Saturday or Sunday. Even Saturday (early) doesn't count towards Sunday mass obligation.

I could be wrong but I've never heard of any church doing this.

All the difficultly you're going through is one of the many reasons I decided not to get married in the catholic church.

We looked for a more 'open' church and found the Congregational Church of Patchogue. I've searched for the book they gave me, but for some reason it's not with the rest of my wedding stuff. They may be more open to doing weddings on different days of the week.

Here is their website if you're interested.

It's really beautiful...over 200 years old with tons of stained glass!

Also consider the Historical Chapel . The end result, the fact that you will be married, will not be affected one iota whether or not you marry within a church. God is everywhere, not just in a church! A beautiful religious union performed at the hall, at a chapel, at a park or anywhere of the like is still a beautiful religious ceremony. It is the feeling behind it, the truth behind the vows, the love of all those present that makes a wedding special.
Please consider all this before you change your date. It's not just the extra money to change the date, it's the extra problems that the catholic church is giving you.
We ARE here for you and I hope you're able to come to a solution that makes you happiest.

ETA: If you're willing to go into the city, call Riverside Church. There's the
Wedding Chapel NYC in Queens as well as a host of gardens, the chapel at Hofstra University and many, many other places (including your CH).

Something you might want to check out....if you know anyone who is a priest who could do the ceremony, many Catholic high schools and colleges have chapels- perhaps you could look into the possibility of doing it at one of those (especially if you are an alumnus of the school.)

In my case, the church gave me the date before speaking to the priest, but they did let me know I was just 'pencilled in' and it wasn't definite until I spoke to the priest. So I was able to get some quotes on halls, but didn't book until we knew for certain the date was definite with them.

Everyone has different opinions on this, but for me, getting married in the church was very important and might have been worth spending the extra $$. I do feel for you, because I think the people at the hall misled you, by giving you advice on something they obviously knew nothing about. If you don't have it in the church, you could always do another ceremony later in the church and wear your dress again! Good luck - I know this must be so stressful for you.
