If your friends wedding is right before/after yours...

Is it alright to say 'let's not give each other gifts?' I haven't asked her about this yet, I was curious to see what you all thought. I would obviously get her a card and tell her how happy I am for her, I just think that if I give her a certain $$ amount, she might as well not cash the check and just give it back to me.

My friend and I were going to do this. We're both in eachothers wedding parties and felt like we'd be passing the same gift back and forth. But both our FH's and parents weren't into the idea. My mom said ALL of my friends will be getting married eventually--basically you're still passing around the same gift. So, we'll be giving each other gifts.

You may have just convinced me to give her either cash or a gift. It's true, everyone will eventually be getting married so the money does just go back and forth, but I just feel that one month apart is a bit close. I guess it's just easier to say 'let's call it even' then to scrounge up the $$ right before my wedding for a gift of some sort. We're pretty close and I don't think she would be opposed to the idea, but I don't know if she would have thought of it. I'm going to feel her out and wait a bit before I decide to say, or not say, anything.
