If you've been to St. Lucia, please tell me about that scary connecting flight...

Did you fly to Puerto Rico and connect via American Eagle propeller plane? I'm about to book a trip there for my one year anniversary, but don't know if I can handle the little plane. Anyone do this?

Also, how was the drive from the airport to the resort? (I'd be staying at Sandals Grande). What airport did you fly into?

I didn't think I would be able to handle that little flight from Puerto Rico either (I am terrified of flying to begin with) so we went to the bigger airport and took the shuttle to the Grand. It really was not as bad as I thought it would be. It is close to 2 hours and a lot of windy roads but we were fine.

The people we were friendly with while we were there did the flight from San Juan and said it was just fine. I guess it is just a matter of preference.

Thanks for your reply! So you were able to get a direct flight into that bigger airport? On American?

We went to St. Lucia a few years ago on Air Jamaica and they had regular jet service connecting through Barbados.

That may be a better option for you.

I know that thier flights are authorized to fly over Cuba being that they are not an American air carrier and supposedly it shaves 30 minutes off of the flight time. BUT......

- the airport we flew into in St. Lucia was a ways away from the hotel I think it took 2 - 2.5 hours to get there- we stopped for drinks food and restrooms on the way- the roads were not that great and the island is hilly ( mountains)

We went for our honeymoon and it honestly was not that bad at all. we flew into the airport close to the resorts and took a safe plane right to the Halcyon where we were staying.
I've hear horror stories about the other airport because you have to take an hour long bus ride on really narrow scary bumpy streets to get to the resorts.....

i was told to go with the short plane flight as opposed to the bus ride

I didn't fly there, I was on a cruise, but when we were on a tour we did get stuck on a road that was closed, that the van went down anyway, so I do believe that the bus ride from the Airport might be, umm. . . adventrous!
Lori, is it a propellor plane, or just one of those tiny express jet planes ( I live near a tiny airport & have taken those they aren't bad)

I flew a few years ago to Puerto Rico and then took the American Eagle to Antigua, which was our final destination. I have to tell you that I was extremely scared. They were actually shifting people around the plane so it was even on both sides. They actually left luggage off (of course mine was one of them) because they thought there was a weight issue. Then the noise was so loud, but it wasn't as bad as how scared I was. This flight was right after one of the singers flight went down due to weight issues on her plane. I am sure it will all be okay since they fly all the time, but I would not do it again due to how frightened I was. I hope I didn't scare you. I just wanted to be honest and your post caught my eye. Good luck planning your trip.

it's just a small express plane - nothing scary at all. they airport is a little scary becuase it's tiny and it's customs and there are a lot of people there with screaming kids.....but the plane is fine

Thanks for the feedback. You scared me a bit, lol, but I'm looking for all information so I can make an informed decision. The only time I flew in a propeller plan, I jumped out of it (skydiving). I don't want to ruin my whole vacation because I'm so nervous about the trip back home. I really don't like small planes, seems like they go down so often.

Ok, so maybe I shouldn't be posting here because I've never been to the Caribbean, but I did take a prop plane from Maui to the Big Island. The plane only held 8 people plus 1 pilot. As much as I was expecting turbulence, especially since we were flying over the ocean and it was a small plane, there wasn't any. I was looking at it as an adventure, but the only thing we got was a great view and a better price. I really enjoyed the flight. Hope this helps.

I hope I didn't scare you. It might of just been the flight I was on. Alot of people on the flight were alarmed. I believe that we may of had to take one back to Puerto Rico on our way home and I don't remember that flight, so it might not of been too bad.

DH and I flew on the 30-40 passenger plane into St. Lucia. It is noisy and yes, they do have to watch the weight, but it was a safe and easy flight. If you can jump out of an airplane you can do this flight. I was more nervous on the driving tour that we took around the island. Narrow, winding streets where nobody stays on their side of the road and the only alternative is a dropoff into water or a small village.

I took a direct flight through Air Jamaica..I don't know if they still do that.

We stayed at the Halcyon, which was near the Grande and flew into Hewanorra, on the south part of the island. We took the shuttle van to the resort and it was an hour and a half. Going there was not bad, although our van broke down halfway there! Another came for us after about 15 minutes. The driver on the ride back to the airport was nuts and almost got us into a head-on collision. But he was very careful after that.

I hate to fly, period, but I really hate to fly on small planes. So if we go back to St. Lucia I would still do the shuttle van and hope we get a driver who is not insane.

We flew Air Jamaica. On the way there it stopped at Antigua (we didn't get off) and on the way back we had to switch planes in Montego Bay. Still worth it to me to not have to fly a small plane (I need to take a pill to fly a big plane and still freak out so a small plane is out of the question for me )

When I went to St. Lucia my flight connected in Barbados, it was a long trip and an even longer layover, but the flight from Barbados to St. Lucia was ok.

I'm going for my honeymoon. Air Jamaica stopped there direct flight. (At least when we need to go) so we are on a US airways flight connecting in Philly so we don't have to get on any small planes.
It just worked out that way but I don't like flying over water nevermind in a small plane.
I had a bad trip from Islip up to Saratoga Springs once and it ruined flying for me!

I went on my honeymoon and we flew American and connected through Miami. It was a big plane, but we flew into the airport at the far end of the island and had to do the 2 hour drive. On the way back, we took a 15 minute helicopter shuttle to the airport to avoid the drive. (though maybe not such a hot idea if you don't like small planes).
