Does anyone have any ideas? Saving for the wedding has really put a damper on my spending money but I need my roots done bad. A while back when I was in school I went to a salon where they had a stylist 'in training' and got highlights done for free and she did a great job. I just called them and they don't have anyone in training right now.
Anyway, I know it's a strech but I was just looking for some ideas.
TIA

I go to a place in elmont, and I don't color my hair, but I think my mom only pays $40 for her cut and color, and they do a great job. It's called ' A Cut Above.' they're on hempstead turnpike (i think it's called hempstead ave in elmont)

I've seen that place - FH works around the corner!
Where are you looking to have highlights done? And how much do you normally pay? I know that the Ulta chain does partial highlights for $65, and they circulate 20% coupons that can be used on salon services.

$40 is a great price. As far as location is concerned, if the price is good enough I'll pretty much travel anywhere in nassau/suffolk. Yes, I'm that cheap. I never thought of Ulta, has anyone gotten color there? That's a great suggestion, thanks.

i think the $40 she mentioned is for color, not highlights. They tend to be more expensive.
I've had highlights done at the Ulta in commack, and I would highly recommend the stylist. She was AWESOME. I was in the same situation as you - I had a big tuition bill due, and it was just before xmas. I was very happy w/ the results!

me too!!! The last time I got a cut, I paid $20 and left wet. I came home and dried it myself! Drying is not worth $25 to me when tuition is due!!!

Re: I'm broke and need hightlights done
Ive gotten HIGHLIGHTS done at supercuts. They are pretty good. I went to the one in Wantagh and It was 45.00. However they wont foil your whole head only the crown of it. Or you could have the full head capped for 45.00.
I went to Ulta for my last haircut (not highlights) and i was happy with the haircut.

Re: I'm broke and need hightlights done
It's gone now, but I used to get haircuts at a beauty school in Levittown. I usually went when money was tight because it was inexpensive. I was always very pleased. And I believe that they did color, highlights, perms, etc. Try looking for beauty schools and see if you can go on their training nights.

The l'oreal hair dye with highlights kit (I believe it's $21) really works well. I used to use it to my own and my hair dresser couldn't believe that I did it myself. It's actually surprisingly easy to use.

Re: I'm broke and need hightlights done
I might be in the minoity here, but if you are getting married soon, I don't think it is a great idea to fool around with color. Undoing a bad color job to look good in time for the wedding could end up costing more in the end.
ETA: Not trying to bring you down, just don't want you to deal with what my former hairdresser used to call a 'hairmare.'

The girl I go to in Suffolk charges me $50 for a haircut and face framing highlights. I LOVE the way she does my hair. It comes out really nice.

Re: I'm broke and need hightlights done
I used the Loreal home highlight kit last year...followed all the directions and my highlights were orange! I had to go to my hairdresser to dye it darker bc it looked like the color of Kraft macaroni and cheese. The hair dye from the salon did cover it though so I think you should be ok playing around with it for the spring and summer. Good luck!
