I'm changing my ering setting, and I have a question....
If a jeweler has a setting I like, she/he should be able to switch the setting infront of me, no? I WILL NOT leave my ring with someone or let them take it in the back. No way, no day. Just making sure they do this. Thanks!

You are entitled to wait and watch while they clean, change the setting, etc........ If they say otherwise then I wouldn't leave your ring there.

If you don't mind, why are you changing? I only ask this because i was thinking about it myself and thought i was the only one. I have the tiffany's lucida ring and i picked it out myself. But the band is thick and it makes my diamond look smaller than it really is. So that is why i am thinking of switching to the thinner band.

You should definitely be able to watch. My FH told me he watched the whole setting process! Good luck!

I sat for an 1 1/2hr. and watched them take out my diamond from one setting and put it into another, and I made it very clear other wise I would have went some where else.

Thanks girls! Corinne, I never changed it in the first place because everywhere I went told me I would have to wait 10 days! I was like, NO WAY JOSE! oct2004, I am changing it becuase it's not all one ring. JT bought me a beautiful solitaire, then remembered a few months later that I wanted side stones originally, so he got me a wrap with two more diamonds on each side, and now I want to set them all on one band. It's ridiculous to have a wrap, a solitaire and then add a band. It just looks like too much. I also would like the ring to look a little different than it looks now.

What if your stone doesn't fit in the settings they have at the place? Then what do you do?
I was thinking of having our jewler change the platinum setting of my ring or make a new setting (they are all custom made) so I would have to leave my ring. FI had to leave the ring when they made the setting when he bought it...is this really bad? How can you be sure you are getting the same diamond back? FI parents have used this jewler for years and years and we have bought a number of pieces from him too...but I do here you shouldnt leave the ring?????

Switching a setting is not as easy as popping in the diamond. They have to make sure the diamond is going to fit properly. As long as your jewelwe is reputable and your have paperwork for your diamond you shouldn t be worried leaving it with them. Yes we have all heard horror stories but very rare if you are working witha reputable jeweler. No tow diamons are the same and if you have papers and are still worried have it appraised once it is finished.

You may have to go back another day at a scheduled appointment to watch the setting change, but they shouldn't say no.
I had to do this (several times, unfortunately) and I left my ring once & paniced the entire time. When I got it back I took it to an appraiser to verify that the EGL inscription was the same
