I'm confused about addressing inner envelopes...please help

I am getting computerized calligraphy from the place I am ordering invitations, and I received an excel spreadsheet for the addresses of outer and inner envelopes. There are instructions about addressing etiquette included with this spreadsheet, and it says:
'Inner Envelopes should read: Mr. and Mrs. Doe (without the first name); children's names should be on the inner envelope only'

My question is:
What's the point of putting Mr. & Mrs. Doe without the first name on the inner envelope if it's already on the outer envelope?

Instead of doing that, can I write something like:
Aunt Carol, Uncle Ted, Fred and Alice

You can definitely do that! I did Mr. & Mrs. John King and address on outer. On inner I did Mr. & Mrs. King and then the second line said Michelle and Ryan. I hope that helps!

I see no reason you can't do it that way. I did it according to the etiquette you mentioned.

I used first names only on the inner envelopes. You can do it whatever way you want!

I am only doing outer envelopes only thru computer calligraphy. They will all wind up in garage. Why spend the extra money for the inner envelopes??? That is my opionion

teh inner is less formal.. you can get as unformal as you would liek all the way down to Aunt and Uncle.. Also the inside serves the purpose of telling the person you are inviting if they are able to bring a guest. The outside should only have the name of the guest if they are engaged!

Computerized calligraphy on outer and inner envelopes was included free with the price of invitations as part of the grand opening package for EZ Calligraphy.

So price is not a problem for this matter.

Most of my relatives are not familiar with the etiquette nuances of writing the names of children on the inner envelope only...if they don't see 'and family' on the outer envelope they will assume that their kids are not invited and then we will be receiving many, many confused phone calls. So, I plan to write 'and family' on the outer and put everyone's first names on the inner envelope...it'll be a nice little touch I think.

Do whatever you want but be aware it will set the tone for your wedding.

If you want your wedding to remain formal I would not get casual on the inner envelopes unless you are having a small wedding.

I did as the etiquette indicates leaving the inner envelopes as Mr & Mrs without first names.

But seriously, it's your wedding, do whatever pleases you!!

Good point...I didn't think about the formal vs informal tone...something else to consider then...

Inner enelopes can be as informal as you want them to be.
Fist names only or Aunt/Uncle etc
