I'm depressed....

I'm depressed....

Ok, so this might be a little long.....I moved to Massachusetts in September to be with FH as he finished up college( he started art school ages ago, and the credits don't transfer), but it was a good deal for me because I decided to drop my masters and start teaching, and this offered me the opportunity to teach and get paid, yet fulfill my student teaching for NY. Well, I am so depressed here. Although I have made friends here, I miss my family and I miss my NY friends. I just miss Long Island. I hate Massachusetts and have tried to pick out some good points, but I'm just not happy. FH feels the same way and although we go to LI usually three weekends a month, I am just too tired to do it anymore. Not one of our friends have called us since we've been here, and when we said something to them, they said it was our job to see them, since we were the ones who moved away. So, I don't even know why I miss them, but I do. As happy as I am that I am here with FH, it's just very stressful being away from everyone. Not to mention I work with emotionally disturbed teens in a private school and get screamed at by them for 8 hours a day. I can't wait to move back to LI Ok, that's my vent.

Where in MA are you living? I lived in Arlington for 6 years before we moved to LI to be closer to DH's family. I can certainly understand how tired you are of that drive. We used to go back and forth a lot, but as the years passed, we did it less and less. I think there are a few others from LIW that are in MA - maybe you could plan a get together up there, to meet some new friends.

By the way, I can recommend Precious Memories bridal salon in Malden if you plan to look up there - I got my dress there and they were wonderful!

Another MA resident here. I follow my husband here over four years ago when he started law school. Although my experience has been different -- I had friends from college who were nearby. I have fallen in love with the area and the lifestyle we can afford here. We have a three bedroom condo, while in New York we would have been lucky to get a large one bedroom for the same price in a similar neighborhood. So, he graduated and we are still here.

If you have been traveling three weekends a month, no wonder you aren't happy here. Of course it sounds to me like your mind is already set to move, but I think your time here would be more pleasant if you allowed yourself to settle in a bit more and to travel less -- with your stressful job you need down time to just relax!!

Re: I'm depressed....

Wow, it's nice to hear of some other people who live in MA! Currently, we are living in Bridgewater, right across from the college. It's a beautiful town, but everything closes so early! We have decided to stay up here until the 2nd week in April because we've had enough traveling for a while. We are discussing what to do about next September, since my teaching certification in NY will go through by then. FH has one more semester of school up here after this one, and I think I will be moving back to LI without him in August But it would be difficult to find a job in December when we would move back. It just makes sense in the long run for me to go home before him.
In the meantime, I am trying to focus my attention on the people that I've met here. They have been very good to me and I would like to get to know them better. It's nice to think I have a light at the end of my MA tunnel, though I also think I will post to find out who else is up here, too. Thanks for the advice, girls! It's nice to talk about these things with someone other than FH

When the warm weather comes, check out a place in Quincy called Waterworks. It's sort of along the lines of the LI beach clubs plus more. It's all outdoors, but it's an evening scene (may have stuff in the day too, I was only there at night) They have outdoor pool tables and beach volly ball pits, live music, BBQ & beer (and booze) and is by the boat docks, with lounge chairs where you can sit back and enjoy.
