I'm new at this. Where to start from e-party through wedding?

Hi everyone. Congratulations on your engagement's and wedding. My name is Rina and I live in Glendale, Queens, New York and I am thrilled that there is a discussion board devoted to weddings, brides, etc, around this area in New York. I was reading some posts and think you all are truly a blessing for participating and offering valuable advice to one another.

I just got engaged 5/28/04 and am so thrilled and anxious at the same time. I've been to numerous halls throughout my years, starting from Russo's, SandCastle, Leonards, Swan Club, Chaetau Brian, etc., yet I am still stuck and have no idea where to begin. Would any of you have a list or website, or know of any books listing every hall in New York? I know it sounds nuts, but I have no idea where to go first, what to ask, what to look for and so on. I'm so scared I'm going to forget something down the line which is very important. I know I want a florist, videographer, photographer and D.J. (for engagement party). Did any of you ladies have an engagment party at a hall and what did your outline entail? Luckily, I will be having my e-party next year in May and approximately 2yrs later get married (cause I want to finish law school). Do you ladies think having an engagement party 1 yr later and then getting married 2yrs after is odd. I want to really spend time planning each detail and not feeling rushed. Don't wanna forget anything.

I come from a very large, traditional Italian family and would need something to accomadate there desires. Initially, I was thinking about having my enagement party on a yacht, but, my family and my fiancee's family were not to happy with the idea and eventually I saw that it was better suited on land than sea . Instead I thought of having my rehearsal dinner there when the time to get married arrives. Any idea's would be helpful or if any of you have any suggestions on where to begin, please write. I'm actually planning on giving out oscar looking trophies and asking the people at my engagement party whether they would like to be in the bridal party. Example- And the award for Best Man goes to......drum roll and so on. I just gotta figure out how I will go about introducing or awarding my bridesmaid (there's about 12 I am planning to ask).

Overall, unfortunately, I'm one of those perfectionist that has to have every detail just right and at this point think it's gonna take me 10 years just to plan a wedding. I have no idea how my cousins and you girls managed to put together a wedding. I give you all so much credit. In a way it seems like planning a wedding is like planning a whole production. I probably feel this way because I'm a bit paranoid. I'm excited to start planning, but going crazy over where to start. It seems so over-whelming right now. HELPPPPP! Lol. Sorry it's so long.
Thanks.

Welcome and Congratulations!!! This site is a lot of fun and you will love it! The girls here will walk you through the A-Z of the party!!!

First off, you can relax because you actually have a lot of time to make it wonderful and your own. But I have to caution you about really obsessing that both days down to every detail will be 100% perfect. I have heard a rumor that something always gets a little messed up at these parties (G-d's way of showing us what is important) and I have seen it first hand on some weddings I have been to. The good news is only you will notice and your guests will think all is wonderful. It wil be fabluous because it will have your touch and it is where you and DH are getting married or celebrating your love.

Okay, first things first. I would find a place you like and book a date for the e-party and the wedding. The reason why I would find the wedding place is because you would want to register as well, and they need a firm date. The start asking questions about bands, photographers, and videographers. We actually have questions on this board to either ask or look up through searching. Wedding books are helpful as well. You have plenty of time and could probably have your pick for both the eparty and wedding. The details are what ties everything together and you do not have to worry about that anytime soon!!! Hope that this helps!!!!

HI Rina,

Congrats on ur recent engagement. There is a magazine called, Locations that has detailed listings for hundreds of reception places on the Island and the surrounding area. I bought mine at Barnes and Noble and found it very helpful when it came to weeding out halls. It also has contact information that is very useful!

Best of luck!

Hi Rina, Congrats on your engagement! Planning a wedding is time consuming but also a wonderful experience...You must make your day 'THE ONE'...As someone has stated, there is a book, Locations & also a magazine New York Weddings....It will show you everything you need. You can get it in any drugstore or Barnes & Noble...I have also found the magazine 'Bridal Guide' to be very helpful for wedding planning tips...FH & I will be enaged just shy of 2 years when we get married...We did not have a formal engagement party, so I can't help there...Good luck & I am sure you will find this website so helpful!

Hi, and congratulations!!! You have plenty of time if you are thinking about a 3 year engagement. I would first concentrate on the e-party. i think it would be fine to have that in about a year and then the wedding 2 years later. It spaces things out nicely. Did you say you wanted a florist, video and photographer for the e-party? That can be expensive but its good because you have a lot of time to save for it. I am having my e-party at a VFW hall-we didnt want to go crazy because we are paying for the wedding ourselves, but we are still having a DJ and a ton of food. Get the book Locations-they have a lot of places in there-not all of them but a lot. I would really pay attentionto this website because you will get more info from here than from any other book. Good and bad stuff about halls, florists and the rest of teh vendors. Its a great place to get ideas from also. I am so happy I am part of this board. There is so much to do and at first it seems so overwhelming but then you talk to other people who are in the same boat as you. You will be fine. Just keep posting questions and you will get a ton of information. Good luck!!!

Thank-you so much for your help. The halls are usually what books the fastest, right? How do you know which hall is 'the one'?

Thank-you all for your help. I'm gonna run to Barnes and Noble's today and get that book. The website provided was very, very helpful. I printed many things off it. A BIG THANK-YOU TO ALL.

Thanks. I'm so excited!!! No, I'm not actually getting married on 1/1/07. When I signed up, they wanted a date so I just put anything down. I know it would most likely be in 2007...but not sure when. I need to go back and see whether I can change it.
