I'm numb now...(LONG) (update page 2)

I'm numb now...(LONG) (update page 2)

My fitting is next Tuesday though right now I don't know where to find my head.

My mom and one of my sisters flew away on vacation on Christmas Eve and are due to come home on Monday. Mom really needed some time away before the wedding and after the stress of losing Dad, she deserves it. So they flew comfort style with her miles FIRST CLASS. Good right? WRONG.

I get a call today from my other sister who is here in NY while I was actually at Mom's house taking in the mail and doing what not. It seems as if Mom took a fall today in a parking lot, as she lost her footing, hitting her head on a car, losing consciousness for a few seconds and cutting the inside of her mouth as well as a finger. She had a CAT scan and X-RAYs and so far they saw she is OK.

Mom is 74 and has not been steady on her feet since her own triple bypass heart surgery last February WHILE my father was also in the hospital. Both parents in the hospital at the same time had us kids running around like 4 crazy chickens with our heads cut off. We did everything for them as good children do - NO QUESTIONS ASKED. After mom was done with her stint at the hospital, she wasn't really quick to resume the physical therapy she so desperately needs because she was at the hospital every day tending to my father's needs. She has been walking with a cane for several years, but she really needs more assistance at times. I see her teeter and sometimes she thinks she can do more than she should. Before HER surgery last year, when Dad was in ICU and took a bad turn (one of many times) she raced in the room, slipped, fell and dislocated her shoulder.

So now I am thinking. On one side of my head I am upset that she's hurt and away from home. However she is in a major city at a good place and is being taken care of. On the other hand I am feeling angry and selfish. I watched my father die for 9 months and it is still taking its toll on me. We couldn't save him. I am watching my mother deteriorate slowly day after day because she has lost so much will. She can be helped but won't do what she needs to do. I try to remind her, from time to time, that there are so many more blessings left to witness and share in. She has weddings, Bat Mitzvahs and future grandchildren to look forward to. I know she has to live her life as independently as possible but not if it means not being to recognize her own deficiencies. We can talk and suggest all we want, but 74 year olds do not have grand epiphanies that they will adopt a new lifestyle.

It was suggested that she see her own doctor when she gets back - the first date being Tuesday. Since we NEVER EVER EVER EVER let Mom go to a doctor alone because she does not interpret medical jargon well, and if she does, she doesn't report it well to us, I am not really sure what is going to happen. The earliest appointment any one of us can make with her is 4 pm on Tuesday, just one hour before my first dress fitting. I told my sister to go with Mom and we will figure it out. As selfish as this may seem right now, I really do not have much time to play with. This fitting must get done. I even changed this appointment from the 28th so she didn't miss it when she was away. I want her there but it isn't looking like it will happen.

Thanks for letting me vent.

AMMENDMENT
Ed just bought me two packages of Oreos and a coupon for Subway for a free 6 inch sandwich to make me feel better!

I know it must seem like everything possible is going wrong, and I know you can't see it now, but your wedding will be amazing and everything WILL work out. Leslie - my heart goes out to you and your family. I have a similar situation going on with my own father who has health problems since losing my Mom to breast cancer almost 4 years ago. You are completely correct...you cannot change someone no matter what the age. You are not being selfish by going to your dress fitting. You are simply taking care of what needs to be taken care of and one of your siblings will be with her. Please know you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I sincerely hope that your mother finally sees that she should get the help she needs to make herself feel better.

I understand partially where you're coming from. My mother has a multitude of health problems. She has survived lymph node cancer, but the problems she has now are a mile long, and a few can cause her to die at any given time. Now you would think knowing this, she would follow doctor's orders to get tests done. Does she? No. She is a stubborn woman who will complain about the pains to the end, but won't do something about it to make it better and it frustrates me to no end.

She knows she has damaged her body over the years and this is why she is in this predicament. Does she stop? No. I've talked till I am blue in the face.

The best thing to do is just be there to support her in her decision and pray that she makes it through this obstacle ok. Maybe it's just a wake up call to finally get the care she needs.

If you need anything, you know where to find me.

Leslie..i know this must be very hard for you. I think you are making the right decision...if your mother had noone to take her I would say change the apt...but your sister will be with her.....you can always meet up with them after your fitting and go over what the doctor said.

(Side note...make sure she gets copies of all the tests that she takes in Florida.)

My thoughts and prayers are with you!!!!

My sister who is withher is an attorney and knows every bit of hospital red tape to cut through. you HAVE to when you have elderly parents.

Oh, Leslie, I am so sorry!! I know it can be very frustrating! My dad and his brother and sister have similar problems with my grandparetns. Elderly people are very set in their ways and do not like any change. Is your mother ok on her own? My mom's mom was wasting away after my grandfather died. We finally got her to an assisted living facility, and we really believe it saved her life and bought her more years.
I don't know if this is the situation you are in, but its always something to consider.
My love goes out to you, and I hope your mom stays well!

If my mother could swallow her pride, she would do best in assisted living. It is very hard for her to give up the home where she raised her family - not so soon after losing Dad. We always have our eyes open for facilities and keep them in the backs of our minds for when the time is right. She's just not ready yet.

Re: I'm numb now...(LONG)

Leslie i don't know your mom...and her health condition is one that I can not comprehend, since I do not know her...but do you think some has to do with the depression of your dad? Two of my dear friends lost their dads to cancer in the same year. One had parents who were married for over 40 years...her mom is in her 60's with some health issues and from knowing her as long as I do, I thought she was not going to last without him, but after about two years, I started to see her old self come through, I am sure she suffers every day with the loss, but she is coming along....my point is maybe after some more time, your mom will become a bit more stronger....

I hope that helps, again, I don't know your mom, but this is what I have experienced....

and re: assisted living..it is never too early to look into that...
