It's a very very sad and tragic end for an infant. It does however highlight the fact that the safe haven laws aren't advertised enough. Obviously this infant's mother didn't know she could just drop off the baby at a hospital or police station without any negative consequences.
Not that I'd drop my baby off...but honestly, I was completely unaware that this was TRUE. Seemed so 'urban legend' that I'd never given it a second thought. I actually find it comforting to know that someone who finds themselves in crisis has this option, sadly, so very many don't know about it.

PIGS!!!
WHO EVER DID THAT IS THE LOWEST OF THE LOW AND SHOULD BE LEFT NAKED IN THE COLD TO DIE!!
TWISTS ME THAT PEOPLE COULD BE SO RIDICUOUS!!
ny has a 'safe zone' - or whatever its called where they can drop off a baby no questions asked - but these animals chose to leave this baby to die!
MURDERS!!
horrible horrible story.
I can see your frustration and/or anger but those words are a bit harsh. Often these mothers are not the brightest individuals...rarely is it an Ivy League graduate. I was completely unaware of the whole law/program where you can leave your baby with a hospital or the police and be free from inquiry. Most often the mothers who do this are not well educated and are not rational in any manner once the babies are born. Still makes them a murderer in my opinion as well, but often the uninformed and scared make the least rational decisions.

I am going to have to agree with Darlene. I work in a placement where there are young ladies who are incapable of knowing right from wrong. Nobody knows who the mother is. Nobody knows if she has 100% of her normal cognitive functioning or if she was a cold-blooded killer. Trust me, there ARE many young women (children and adults) who are limited with their faculties and may not know what to do. People often have horrible lapses in judgement. I think this was more than likely the case - JMO.
Yes, it is one of the most horrific things to read about or witness and i certainly would not expect anyone to understand what would prompt a person to do this, but sadly, it can and does happen repeatedly. Nobody in their right mind would do this, so why should we assume that a person with a normal intelligence would?
NIcely said. It is a horrible situation and my prayers go out to the child who lost their life so young However, my prayers go out to the person who felt so desperate and lost that the only 'option' would be to discard of their child. Plus, I would highly doubt, like you said, the person was in their right mind. Its such a tragedy.
Lastly, SAFE HAVEN LAWS are not known by the majority of people. It's a shame and should def. be discussed more.
Prayers for everyone

leaving your baby in the cold, in the garbage, in a bag to die is not harsh??
at some point you have to just know right from wrong - and leaving your new born child in the garbage is just WRONG! i will not sugar coat it with anything. programs like the safe haven laws are put in place for the uneducated, desperate and for those w/o options.
if you are not rational enough to figure out that babies are not trash - than you are not rational enough to live in free society. jmho

I couldn't agree with Tricia more. This was an inhumane act. Wether or not the mother/father knew their options is irrelevant... everyone knows the difference between right & wrong.

In reply to the above debate, I dont think education has anything to do with it. The Safe Haven awareness posters are posted on almost every hospital doors/windows in NY, and everytime something like this happens (which is pretty often these days), the news broadcasts it and mentions this program. And even of you were not aware of it, if you're having sex, then Im sure the consequences have to cross your mind. I think that people that do these kind of things require serious help and should not be allowed to roam free in our society.

I agree with this. This act is the lowest of low. She had 9 months to come up with a plan. This is what she decided to do. Someone should wrap her up in a plastic bag tie it up and leave it in a dumpster. That poor baby was never even given a chance. This just sickens me beyond belief- I cant even express my anger & discoust enough.
To the loving family out there that have been trying for years and cant concieve & would do anything to have a baby, Im sorry there are animals like this in the world. May that girl suffer 10 times worse than that poor baby.
