Although I've often suspected students of plagarism, I've never been able to prove it. Well, I'm sitting here grading papers, and I thought to myself 'Wow this paper is great, and far better than anything else this kid has written!' So I type a sentence of it into google... yeah, well apparantly thats b/c this story was actually written by a very accomplished screen writer!! GRRR. Now I have to fail this kid for the semester AND decide whether I'm going to turn him for academic dishonesty...

i am so jealous that you get to grade papers. i miss WRITING them.
but yeah that totally s*cks. as someone who spent hours writing and researching in college, I would say turn his a$$ in but i am cold and heartless whenever it comes to cheating.

I say fail him- but don't report him. I think failing the class and having to (possibly) explain it is punishment enough for a first time offender. If he repeatedly did this in your class, I'd say report him too.

As a current college student (which I think is what you teach) I will say report him!! I am tired of spending nights in a row writting a paper and researching and then getting into class and listing to people that 'oh yeah I did it this morning I just google it.... bla blah' and sometimes they get a good great... unless you report him is the only way h/she is going to learn and they are kind of big to know that what they did is wrong

Hate it when that happens, but unfortunately it happens all too often.
At the university where i teach, the policy is to turn it over to the academic honesty committee, and the committee decides whether the student fails the class.

I would really hate to be in your position, but if he blatantly plagarized, he should be reported. Most students work so hard to NOT do that and do the right thing and its an insult to them if he got away with it.

I totally agree with turning him in. I know it sounds harsh but I was another one of those students who actually took the time to sit and write my own paper. There's a reason that they have penalties for doing something like that.

i think it's funny that this student thought that they could pull this off! they don't realize that you are educated, that's why you're the teacher and they are the student!
