So one of my closest GF's (and BM's) is 27 and single...very smart, professional, beautiful but can't find the RIGHT guy. Anyway, she's in an upscale bar in Manhattan Friday for Happy Hour and this guy sits next to her at the bar and tells her his name (won't post) and proceeds to tell her the following: that he wrote MatchBox 20's Unwell and Bright Lights, won Best Male Vocalist at the 1997 VMA's where he met his wife who died in the WTC. He's a Harvard grad who wanted to pursue a singing career but got hooked on drugs after his wife's death and ruined his voice. He's 100% clean now, he was in rehab with Billy Joel. His current residence in LA, but he's looking for a place in NYC and while he's looking he's staying at the Four Seasons with his sister, his Jaguar is safe there.

Being a 'little' suspicious of this guy, I jump on Google and find that there is no Best Male Vocalist category during the VMA's and if mistakenly said VMA's instead of Grammy's he wasn't one of the nominees among Sting and Eric Clapton, there also was no woman with his last name killed at TWC (unless she didn't take his name) and if he were this songwriter for MB20 I would think his name would have popped up on Google.

So my friend asks if she should go out with him, I'm like WTF are you kidding me? You should have never given him your # in the first place......did I overreact??

If his name is Rob Thomas, than he can be believed. Because Rob Thomas wrote those songs alone.

What an a-hole.

Oh, yeah.....he had a comeback for this. He said that songwriters sell the rights to their songs to the recod labels so his name would never appear on albums.

I told my friend that maybe he is a writer...of fiction novels because he has one hell of an imagination! She'd kill me if she knew I posted on here, but I've been accused of being a 'mother hen' in the past. I truly worry about my friends but this takes the cake!

That is ridiculous...he wins an award that doesn't exist for a song that according to him is legally not his..........ya gotta love the manhattan dating scene, the weirdos comeout in droves

That's absurd!! This guy is a WACKO!!!!
Regardless of who owns the songs, they would have to give the original artist credit.
They can't say Song Written by :jane smith, if it was really written by jon doe.

Sounds like the biggest BS er I ever heard of. Like someone else said, no matter what your backround, when you divulge that much info on your life to a stranger it is probably all lies. I would stay clear of this wanna be.

she shouldn't waste another thought about going out with him. it's possible he might have been hoping she was a wide-eyed naive (or drunk) woman at a bar that ould believe all that nonsense. he only wants one thing.

you can check out All Music and put the name of an album in the search field. It will then list all credits for everyone who worked on it from writers, to singers, to musicians to producers...its a good way to double check if he is FOS!
