I just went to the shelter to drop off some stuff and I can't believe how many adorable dogs and cats are sitting in cages waiting to die.
Then, I go on the Pets board and see all these people who buy their dogs. I just don't get it, how can people be so selfish that they want what's 'hot' rather than what needs a home.
If people didn't buy, but adopted, so many animals would not be murdered because they are 'unwanted'. Plus, so many of the dogs I saw were actually purebred...It's so sad. There would be far fewer backyard breeders and puppy mills. Can you imagine being bred and bred and constantly having your kids taken away?
We have 3 kitties plus a foster, plus another we have a friend fostering, or I'd take more in myself! We can't have dogs here (plus we live in a 1 bdrm in Brooklyn...more won't fit).

In cases like this, is it ok to let these dogs suffer just to save the life of another pet by adopting???
This is why I get so upset about buying from pet stores....
Perhaps your sister should have researched where pet store puppies come from.
ETA: By buying puppies from petstores, you support the Puppymill industry. If you are okay with that, that's fine. Most of these dogs are registered with Dog Registry of America
Take a minute and look over the registration requirements... They don't require genetic testing, you can breed siblings, you can breed multiple litters from the same b*tch, etc...These are NOT good things for a dog.
I think that is such a blanket statement. We bought Fred from a pet store because we happened to be there and fell in love with him.. This DOES NOT mean I SUPPORT puppy mills. That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.
Yes I know about puppy mills, Ive read plenty of information about it, however, I just couldnt leave him there. Thanks for the information , but Im not about to feel guilty about saving my little guy from the pet store...
Sheesh

I happen to disagree with you because by buying the dog, you support the industry. Just like drug addict that buy drugs support that industry. That is the very essence of supporting the industry. Why else do you think it continues???
As far as the stupidest thing you ever read...Did you go to the website? Did you read any of the stories?
I wasn't trying to make you feel guilty at all. We all make our own decisions based on what is best for us.

Yes I said I have read info on puppy mills HOWEVER you are ignoring the fact that I was at a pet store, saw a sick dog and couldnt part with him.
So your saying that I should have turned by back on him and left him to die??
Af far as I know dogs cant choose how they come into this world.. yes it is unfortunate, and should not be allowed... but that means there needs to be stricter laws. I was not about to let the dog suffer because he was at a pet store.

I'm not telling you what you should or shouldn't do. Fred is adorable and I'm glad he's in a good home.

Thats the reason why I am saying you arent listening.. and not that I feel the need to justify my decisiom.. BUT I did NOT go to the pet store in search of the dog. We stopped there for food and happened to see Fred, we never go to pet stores because I get too sad seeing them all but my mom needed food and it happened to be on the way to my aunts.

Re: I'm so sad!
I think that the real answer is stricter laws. For many different reasons people buy dogs from pet shops. I have a dalmatian who I bought 13 years ago from a pet shop. At the time I didnt have internet so wasnt as easy to see as many dogs as we do today who are all over the contry waiting for adoption and meet our desires/needs. I was 13 and wanted a dalmatian. We went to 2 or 3 pounds and then to the pet store and I got my Casey who has been a great dog to my family for her whole life and I would not change buying her for anything. In my life I have also had a dog who was going to be put down because she was the 'runt' but my dad saved her, a dog who my mom brought home from the grocery store, and a dog we got at a garage sale (the owners were moving, we did NOT go in search of a dog). And currently I have a dog who is a rescue from last years hurricanes down in the Bahamas.
I have loved each of my dogs and it is NOT their fault how they came into this world. It is the fault of the breeders and puppy mills but without stricter laws and consequences nothing will change. The one thing to consider with adopting is that no matter what you should research the breed before you buy/rescue it. Each person has their own limitations as to what they can handle/tolerate/have time for etc and they need to pick a dog who will compliment their lives! Otherwise we run into the issue that people will not be able to live with their animals and more animals will be 'waiting to die' because of uneducated nad unprepared owners.
I think its harsh and ignorate to judge people as 'selfish' because they dont rescue in all cases. Each person has their reasons and none of us has the right to judge.
Personally I just feel that if you want to make a difference go to congress and get harsher laws institued, Educate potentional owners instead of judging them....I feel there are better ways to acomplish your goal.

THANK YOU
Instead of blaming people for buying dogs.. blame the puppy mills and the laws that allow them to function

Re: I'm so sad!
alot of dogs from northshore are sick or are uncared for healthwise
i know people who have gotten dogs from there and the dog died weeks after
now how terrible is that
you cant compare buying from a breeder to getting from the n.s. animal league
imagine taking a dog home, your kid falls in love with it - then it dies?
i dont think your post was very kind. you are comparing apples and oranges
you might as well insult people who adopt newborn babies vs foster children
two very DIFFERENT things

Re: I'm so sad!
your question is not as black and white as you make it out to be.....i know i would get my next cat from a shelter, we've either adopted them or they adopted us .
so long as i'm saving the cat, i don't care where it comes from. why should dogs be different?? whats right for you, is not right for everyone else...

Does anybody know of any pet stores that support puppy mills? Do they all? I don't know personally but perhaps knowing where to avoid would a start to help this problem because not everyone is going to find the right dog for them at a shelter unfortunately.
ETA: Does anyone know about the laws regarding puppy mills?
The ones that I am most familiar with are Canine Corral in Huntington, The Yuppy Puppy in Pt. Jefferson, and they own another one in Coram but I forget the name. You can usually tell if the dog is a Puppymill dog by where it comes from - PA and MN are big states for puppymills - as well as where the parents are registered. Anything other than an AKC or an endorsed affiliate may be a registry created by puppymill breeders.
As far as laws, there are there but it's difficult to enforce.

Northshore Animal League is a rescue - not a pet store. They don't sell animals, they adopt them out. I have gotten a few dogs from NSAL and they were fine.
I just wanted to add that buying from a breeder doesn't insure the health of the animal at all. I also don't think you can compare children to animals.

Im sorry to sound irritated but do you not have responses for what everyone else said. I was very offended by your posts and now you just seem to be ignoring rebuttals agaisnt your argument. It isnt right to insult people like that and then just to ignore the responses, is even worse.
So you answer is that since laws are hard to enforce we should let these puppies die and just adpt and that will solve everything??!!??

What specifically would you like me to answer that I am not answering?
If you read through my posts, you will see that I never said that I only believe in adoption.
Yes, the laws are hard to enforce due to the lack of man power and resources. I do what I can by supporting legislation and donating to agencies that help support the cause.
Again, I will be happy to answer what ever questions you or other pose if I can.

Yes, I have signed that petition already. If you sign up on the site and become a member, they email you the pending legislation and you can help lobby. The Humane Society of US also does the same thing.
Plus, they have some really cute stuff for the holidays

Specifically the posts on the bottom of page two...
Kellys and mine regarding the fact that puppies do not CHOOSE to be born that way so why are we punishing the puppies and not the people behind the puppy mills?
Basically you are saying that we should sit back and let all the puppy mill puppies die just because they were born there??!!??
And no you never said you ONLY believe in adoption but you said directly that if you adopt you support puppy mills aka animal abuse

Re: I'm so sad!
I agree that the puppies do not choose to where and how they are born and I never insinuated that they should be left to die or that I consider buying one of these dogs animal abuse. Yes, puppymill owners should be held accountable and punished to the extent of the laws. The industry is hideous.
My point was in not supporting the puppymill industry as a consumer. The only reason puppymills exist is for profit. That profit comes from from selling their products, ie puppies. They sell their puppies to pet stores and the pet stores sell them to consumers - the consumers are part of the support system of the industry. If the consumers no longer existed, the puppymills would eventually stop breeding because because there would not be any profit in the industry. Do I think that one person not buying one of those dogs is going to collaspe the industy - no - but it has to start somewhere. If one person was educated by this thread and chooses an alternative way of adding a four legged friend to their family, then I have made a difference; maybe that one turns in to three and that three turns in to nine, etc. That could be one less litter born in such conditions. This is what I hope happens.
ETA: I don't think the very last post on page 2 was directed at me, but to the original poster as well as the one above it.
