I know I am really annoying with these questions, but I have never had any apartment renting experience before!
what is the average size of an average apartment....(square foot wise)

Re: im sorry, another apartment question
It depends... if you rent in a house it is most likely going to be smaller than if you are in a complex. In the first house I bought I rented out the upstairs to a couple and it was about 550 sqaure feet (it was the top floor of a cape. But when I rented in a complex I had about 850 square feet...
ETA: They were a couple no pets.

Re: im sorry, another apartment question
I have no clue what the avg. size is but I'll tell you what we have.
1 bedroom, lr, eik, small kitchen, bathroom, 2 hall closets, closet in bathroom, and closet in bedroom. Our living room measures 12x14, bedroom is 12x12, foyer is 7x7, kitchen is..... I dunno, lol but it's small lol. Our bathroom is avg. size.
Neither FH nore I rented before so I feel your pain. In Nassau I feel like you get more room if you rent in a house then in a building. In suffolk it's a diff. story cuz all apts in houses were bigger then any apt in a building that we saw. Except for one in lynbrook which was over our budget but really nice. Our apt isn't the biggest but it's the little things like the crown molding, hardwood floors, and the area that made our decision pretty easy in the end. We are also paying a little less then our max which was a deal maker too. We are also given a seperate locked storage unit downstairs in the basement which will make a huge difference with our little apt.

its in franklin square.....upstairs of cape....
LR is measuring 11x18 (front part slopes but its still long and pretty wide).....eik is 8x13 (8x7 is the actual eat part where the table would go, the rest is the L shaped work area with appliances).....BR is 19x10.......1 pantry closet when you first walk up, one huge walk in between bathroom and bedroom, and one decent size in the bedroom. it also has a 'foyer' but we didn't measure
Is this good? lol
OH and the outside little balcony thing ontop of the garage......a little patio that can fit a bbq, about 4 chairs and a table

Re: im sorry, another apartment question
My fiance and I live in a 1 BR/1 BA apartment in Forst Hills and I think it's about 1000 sq ft. It's definitely a lot tighter considering all the gift we got fromthe bridal shower, and not a ton of storage space, in spite of the fact that we do have a lot of closets!
We're thinking of looking to buy something after the wedding, but in the meantime, it's enough space for us and our cat

Re: im sorry, another apartment question
honestly i think you should keep looking. when we were looking we saw a lot of different places and you def will have to compromise on either space or how new the apt is. BUT do not settle until you are sure and you love it becasue after about 3 weeks of looking at places we were about to settle until our friend called us about this place and once we saw it we were super excited.
It was in the original area we wanted and it was HUGE compared to everything else we saw and it was recently updated so we really lucked out but we wouldnt have known how good of a deal it was if we had not seen other places to compare it to!
So the bottom line is...see more until you are sure! HTH

ITA.... I think you shouldn't settle if you are questioning yourself this much you should keep looking until you can find something that you are really happy with.

Re: im sorry, another apartment question
we are extremely happy with the area, landlords and the cleanliness of the apartment.......I am just asking space wise because since we have both never rented, we have no idea how much space is average or needed....i don't know if 1000 square feet is average, if you can fit 2 people in 600 square feet, etc.....

We live in a garden apartment. that apartment you found sounds good.
I love having a balcony and your apt sounds really nice that it has a balcony area where you can have a bbq. so great. as long as you think your furniture can fit than that should be good.

From what you said it sounds great and that balcony area would make me ok compromising on size. Are you taking EVERYTHING you guys own with you or can you leave some stuff at parents houses?

Re: im sorry, another apartment question
it is. esp with the baby its enough that we can stay here and not be too cramped. we searched for about a month and this was the largest for the price. but we are in suffolk.
ohhhhhhh fun fun buying new furniture!! will you be signing a lease for this apt?

Re: im sorry, another apartment question
i think it sounds good, but it depends on the lifestyle that you want to have. if you plan to entertain a lot and want to have ppl over, then you might want a bigger apt. and it depends on how much stuff you're bringing with you and if you have enough storage space.
i live in a 2 bedroom apt now with my DH and it's the perfect size for us. my DH had a 1 bedroom upstairs in a cape when i met him and it had the slanted wall in the living room and a small kitchen. it was ok, but we knew we needed more space for the 2 of us so thats why we searched for a 2 bedroom.

Re: im sorry, another apartment question
1000 square ft is big! i have lived in 4 different apartments in new york (manhattan, brooklyn and queens) ranging in size from 550 sq ft to 1000 sq ft. I personally think your place and the room sizes sound great, and if you're happy with all the other factors (landlord, area, cleanliness) than to me it sounds great!

Re: im sorry, another apartment question
When we first moved in together FH and I lived in a 650 sq ft apartment. It was tight!
1000 sq ft sounds fantastic to me, we have about 800 now and its ok, but 1000 would be great!

apts on top of capes are small...we are moving into my parents...i will measure it next time we go to let you know. We currently live in a building and our apt is HUGE!!! We are losing a lot of space....for the price, and the balcony and the fact that it's hard to get good apts, I would take it!

Re: im sorry, another apartment question
yeah we saw some others last night that were 2x or even 3x the size, and the space itself was PERFECT and HUGE but they were just not right for us. The area, the people living above and below us, the condition of the home, neighborhood, the landlords, etc.......
I think we are going to go with our gut and take it. There is not many apartments at all in that specific area that we want to stay in and we will make do for a year until we buy our home!

i think smaller than 700 is on the cramped size for 2 ppl. 1000 feet is amazing. and anything in between is more than fine!

she did like it!! she liked that neighborhood A LOT and thats what completely sold her. She was like 'we want to know you guys are in a safe area, can walk around at night, all the homes are imaculate in that area, etc'........she said an apartment is what you make it. There are tons of things you can do to make it 'homey' such as curtains, furniture, paintings, decorations, etc. Is it huge? can we entertain 25 people? absolutely not. but we can have a big bunch of our friends over at once.......
