Next I separate my self from him, physically, by telling him to leave. Then I would look for a marriage counselor and an anger management person. He goes with me to the marriage counselor and separately by himself to the anger management person. If he does not agree to both, we are over!
ETA: I also would document this, write it down, the date and what happened. Just in case I decide to divorce.

well, after i got over the shock -
i probably would want him away from me BUT i think it is all too easy to automatically say 'Divorce!' etc....
We are married and I take it seriously...I said for better and for worse. And if counseling couldn't help, then so be it. But I would have to try.
I don't give up on people!
For the record, my DH has never hit me - not his style! We just get into who can shout the loudest arguments
