I usually say 'on Long Island' - but thats just me.

Once upon a time there a was a thread on this. Also, my sister and I have had a long standing argument about this. We referred to book, a proper english language usage book and learned that both are acceptable.

woah, now we are getting heavy! i usually hear/say 'on' the island, but of course when you live anywhere else, you say 'in'. i.e., we live in Maryland. hmmmmmmm. glad to know both are acceptable, but 'on' just sounds right!

Either or would be politically correct, but we have come to accept ON Long Island. However If you live on Staten Island they say 'we live on the island'

I usually say ON, but I don't think it really makes a difference.

hmmm... I think because it is an island you use 'on'

as for 'in', I'm not sure if they're right or not

I am pretty sure that the correct way is 'in' but everyone says 'on'. I don't think it really matters. I have to remember where I saw the rule but there is actually one on this subject.

you can't live in an isalnd. You live on an island. You live in a town, not on a town.

So you live on long island in seaford (Or wherever)

there was a huge debate on Z100 a few weeks ago about this. they said its 'in' long island. however, consider the source!
