In response to the Valentine Flower delivery vent.

In response to the Valentine Flower delivery vent.

I originally posted this response on the original post, but I really wanted to get my point out there.......

First to Soon 2 Be Mrs 2006, I'm sorry that you didn't receive your V-day flowers. It really is too bad. I'm sorry that you had to deal with a rude person, that was not right.

Now, for the part where I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of unhappy responses. Let me begin by saying I have worked in the floral retail business for over 7 years.

To bride Johnsae: You said in your post that florists should over staff themselves in anticipation. There is normally about 3 people working in our shop on a normal day. On Valentines day we brought in 7 people to work the shop.

To Bride JPC 4806: Who suggested to have Multiple drivers. On a normal day we have 1 driver, maybe 2. For Valentines day we brought in 5 men. Still with this, devileries were not completed until about 7:30pm us. Even with each delivery man being assigned different zones such as: business delivery man, local deliverly man, ect.

I'm sorry but a lot of people do not understand how difficult it is to work on high volume days such as Valentines day and Mothers day. How can every woman get there flowers by 1:00pm. It is impossible. Florists Shops do the VERY best they can can do to make everyone happy.

As for prices being jacked up, that is because of the high prices we pay to get from Whole salers at this time. Chain stores such as Supermarkets can sell things for cheaper because they buy in huge quanities for a large amount of stores, and get deals. Indivalual shops do not recieve this. If a florist buys a say a rose for 2 dollars, they charge you say 4 dollars, becuase they need to make profit, to pay store rent, supplies, as well as employees pay ,ect.

I hope that I don't make to many enemies with this post. But please try to be more understanding, not of the rude people, but of the hard efforts we make to give you the very best. And to be fair, after not leaving our shop until 3:30am on the 13th, to complete early moring orders, then to return at 6:00am to only be able to then leave the shop on the Valenitnes at 10:pm. People get alittle rude, IT IS WRONG, I agree! But it happens, can any of you really say that you have never been rude, to a client, costomer, ect, even just once?

Ladies please be a little more understanding, and not fast to spread around which shops should not be frequented. This is people livelyhoods we are takling about.

To Happy Bride 11-5-06, thank you for being the only other peson to stick up for the hardworkeing florists on this thread.

One more thing, for people who think there Valentines day was bad, because there flowers arrived late (which by the way, I think you were too hard on the driver, who seemed to be really trying to get them to you.) Think about all the people out there who didn't get anything. And also think about all the florists and drivers who had to miss a romantice Valentines dinner and evening with their sweethearts to make everyone elses day perfect.

This is only my opinion. Please don't be too hard on me.

I did not catch the original post... but I'm on your side. I have not been in the flower business (family members have owned so I know how Vday is) but I have been in business (and have my own now) and I totally take into consideration to err is human.

I would so eat at a restaurant again that had a hair in my soup or be confident with the photog we've booked even after hearing some dissatisfied reviews. What does not float other's boat will float mine!

I stand by hard working laborers!

Thank you SO SO much for being on my side! I truly appreciate it, as well do all the florists out there too, I'm sure!

Re: In response to the Valentine Flower delivery vent.

My florist was jam packed with flowers and they said I came at the perfect time because they just had a constant 10 people waiting around!!! And there were three drivers that just pulled out with their trucks loaded to the max!

And.... some guy just called and wanted flowers delivered within an hour and they did it!!!!!!!

Re: In response to the Valentine Flower delivery vent.

I have to say in general that I know how hard it is to work with customers on a daily basis. It amazes me how rude people can be not to mention incredibly impatient. **This is not directed to the original post at all by the way** I used to waitress and let me tell you I almost left crying several times.

Listen to this example:
A woman and her elderly mother came to the rest. I worked at for breakfast. For breakfast we usually serve a juice with the meal. The young woman ordered orange juice for her mother. Instead of bringing the miniatureOJ (seriously the smallest cup ever) I brought her OJ in a larger cup. The woman looked at me and literally said, 'i'm gonna kill you ... this is not the juice that comes with the meal' she said it in a dead serious tone and it took all that I had to still be respectful of her. I replied, 'i'm sorry I thought I was doing you a favor by giving you a more generous serving.' This was not the only situation that I encountered 0 I often left feeling so degraded by customers. However, it really taught me to be extra polite and to realize what people go through on a daily basis when dealing with the public which is why at all costs I am usually very considerate. Even when I'm pressed for time. Everyone seems like they are in such a hurry these days and expect their needs to be met almost immediately.

Last night (for V-Day) we went to a fabulous rest. our server was amazing, really on top of everything, funny, etc. Before I left for the evening I asked to speak with the manager. I gave our waiter a rave review. I often like to do that because how often do we take the time to report good things? I try to remember how hard it was for me when I waitressed. I also do this when I notice a new employee struggling. I offer encouraging words because honestly Im sure it makes a difference. I'm not a saint by any means but that is something that I do to make me feel better and to make my 'going out' experience more pleasant.

Anyway, sorry if I got off track but I totally understand your post and you did a great job stating your opinion in a tactful way.

Edited several times because I am exhausted and my tired fingers have forgotten how to type correctly

Thank you so much again! I'm so happy to be getting responses like this. I was bracing myself for some bad back lash. Thank you ZuzusPetals.

Serving the public is HARD work, and we all do our best to make costomers happy. Service with a smile is always easier to do, when the costomers greet us with a smile also.

Edited tin response to: ZuzusPetals saying she gave a waiter rave reviews to their manager. I also love to do this for good service! People tend to remeber to give a bad reviews to a manger, but forgt about the good reviews.

Thank you for taking the time out to explain yourself in great detail. I completely understand how you feel. I worked as a server, bartender, and hostess for restaurants in my past lifetime, and we would go through the same thing.

Beautifully written tiffandmatt...

My aunt/uncle have been in the florist retail business for 25 years, and I've worked for them/with them for the past 15 (on and off) I can barely feel my hands they're so torn up from roses & knives!! I wanted to reply the way you did about people needing to be more understanding & whatnot, but I'm not as eloquent and knew I'd be frozen out of these boards!

So from all those working with flowers. Thank you!

tiffandmatt

I missed the first post but everything you said is 100% true...

I worked at a florist for over 5 yrs... and you are there until like 5 am the day before v day... and then you are back at the shop around 7am for walk ins...

It is a very stressful time... That being said... No one should have been rude to her, like you said.

But honestly... they are only flowers... worse things can happen...

My mother didn't get her arrangment until yesterday... that is the day AFTER valentines day... who cares... its just the way it goes sometimes.

Sorry if I am being a bummer... its just one of those days/week.

Well said, and a job well done on your behalf!!! I am unfortunately one of those people who loses patience when things aren't done the way and how I want them to be, so from hearing your perspective on this I completely understand. I just don't like the rudeness, I think thats what bothers me the most. If a person can not work under pressure perhaps they shouldn't be there that day.Thats JMO.

Re: In response to the Valentine Flower delivery vent.

Hi I can understand your post and I can sympathize for florists on these holidays. For me it wasnt so much the delivery time etc. For me it was the delivery guy calling at 3:30 to tell me he doesnt have the building and room specified(even though it was and this was even confirmed by the florist website it had gone through) i told him it and he said hed call me if he couldnt find the building but then the fact that it wasnt arriving and I had to leave work for the day. I called to see what was the update on them because the florist didnt call me back (an hour and half later)like she said she would and when i told her politely that i had to leave for the day and there would be no one here she went off on me. (conversation in original post) that was uncalled for and thats what got me upset. and then the delivery guy calling me at 745pm(over 4 hours later) to say sry for the delay what building and room are you in again...that is really bad. yes you have deliveries all day and yes i can totalyy understand the frustration. in my situation it was different then just flowers not being delivered. until the original phone call i didnt even know flowers were coming.

I'm posting this because i in no way was trying to criticize all florists, etc. i didnt even post who the florist was only through FM requests did i let people know. for me it was only regarding what the manager at that particular florist did to me.

I agree!
ETA- I also had worked as a waitress for many years, and was often treated with disrespect on busy days, like VDay or Mother's day. Iwas missing being with my BF or loved ones to be there!
Noone should have been rude, though.

I totally understand where you are coming from- I know that they might no have been a big florist where they CAN get 4 or 5 extra people in. But, Still no reason for the person to be rude to anyone on the phone- Not a good business practice. I was in sales and customer service for a good 5 years. No matter how fustrating anything got I never took it out on a client. And I was in a professional setting.....

I did see the original post and I do agree with you for the most part except that IF the florists know that it may take until 7:30, or lets just say beyond a normal business day to get the flowers delivered (to a person's job), they should inform the consumer of that possiblity when the order is placed so as to avoid situations like the one we refer to. I do understand that the florist may not realize that the delivery address is the recipient's job, however these are all details that should be worked out at the time of the order. Wow - I went on way too long about this!

Soon2BeMrs2006, I know that you were not saying this about the entire Florist Profession. Please don't think I was. I just wanted to try and explain to everyone the difficulties of the floral industry, especially on high volume days. And yes let me emphasize that I complettely agree rudeness is NEVER exceptable from people in costomer service of any kind. And for that I am sorry you had to deal with it.

The florist where I work has 3 regular drivers. A lot of florists, including mine actually look to family members and friends for extra help at this time, the owner of the shop where I work had her husband and brother making deliveries for her, and she is a small shop. We also put bussiness deliveries as top piroity, they go out first, becuase we are aware of the chances of people lnot being there late. It is a good suggestion to inform people of deliveries possibly not arriving until the evening though.

One of the of largest problems we incounter is having costomers give addresses that don't even exits because they are just not sure themselves.

Well anyway, I guess I worried for nothing, because everyone was very fair to me for this post. Thank you all for taking the time to read what I had to say (I know I've had a lot to say)

Hope everyone had a great Valentines Day.

I just want to add that my sister worked out 1800 flowers and I felt so bad for her during the holidays. She never enjoyed a Mothers Day, Easter, etc... until she left.

And she wasnt even doing the orders or anything, she worked in the IT Dept.. so imagine if her ours were nuts.
