I am thinking of having a DJ at our engagement party-not anything crazy, just someone to jazz things up a bit. Does anyone have a recommendation for a simple, inexpensive DJ (under $500 if that actually exists . . .)

Why don't you get somebody to burn a couple of CDs?? Then all you have to do is get a decent sound system!

I dont know about 500 but you can go on repsond.com and fill out the questionare and anyone is within your price range will respond to you through email- and also check out weddj.com they give you a list- Good Luck

Try looking in the pennysaver, I see it all the time. Make sure they have the insurance that the reception hall requires since they won't be recommended.
