Inlaw functions by yourself?

Inlaw functions by yourself?

So I guess I knew this day was coming, but didn't think it would be now. My fi niece is having her two year b-day party at the end of the month, and fi can't go. He is going to a bachelor party and so this will be the first time where I will be going solo to a ffil function.

So I'm curious who else has made this journey, and how'd it go.

I go to FFIL functions all the time without FH. But we have been dating for a while (6 and a half years) so I am pretty close with his entire family. I guess the first time was a little hard, but not that bad. Just hang out with whomever you feel closest to. It might help to ease the nervousness! Good luck!

In the past few months I have done a few events without my FH. His cousin got married in June so we had her shower and her bachelorette party and then her mom, sister, aunts and cousins including me did dinner one night and hung out afterwards at a hotel for more drinks. It's not bad at all, but I've become comfortable with his family since they're all so nice.

I did my first one last year, his cousin's bridal shower. I was a little nervous at first but, once I got there it wasn't bad at all!

I totally remember feeling shy about going to in law functions without DH. But now I look back and it is odd to think that I felt that way b/c I am so comfortable now!! It did not take long to get comfortable at all! Maybe just a few minutes at the first function and that was it!

I've gone to my FSIL's baby shower, future aunt's baby shower and a Funeral w.out my FH. The first time was ok b/c i was the godmother so i was w/my fsil and fmil all night. the aunt's shower was ok and the funeral was fine also.

if you get along w/his family it isn't bad, it actually gives u a chance to get to know them w/out fh's influence lol (my opinion only)

good luck!

FH and I have been together about 8 years SO i have gone to many functions on my own - it is okay since I get along really well with his family

however, recently they have been having 2 to 3 functions a weekend and bc of his job he can't attend any of them! I put my foot down and now I am going to cut back on them - especially since my family is so small he never really has to go to anything for us!

the first time can be intimidating - i remember feeling like everyone was judging how i acted when he wasnt there - but now its fine and i am used to it :)

It is definitely a sign of respect for your 'new' famiyl!

edited bc i am paranoid about some people reading it HA HA

Re: Inlaw functions by yourself?

I did things with FH's family solo before we were even engaged (do i get bonus points? haha)

One was his Aunts Funeral...he had to go overseas for work but i wanted him represented, so I stayed around...in another state with the whole family, which is a BIG group but great people.

Then I flew in again to FMIL's (in Indiana) alone for a few days to help her set up her computer, printer, and teach her the digital camera Fh bought her.

His family is very loving, welcoming people so it's not bad at all. But we also do alot of things independent of each other so i guess that helps, when he had a job he'd be away about weeks a month.

You'll do fine....just be yourself...FH loves you so i am sure his family will see all the reasons why!

Went to FSIL's 21st birthday party at my FH's house without him and it was fine. I feel very welcomed by my FIL's, even though I felt a little awkward at first. Chances are they are going to want to make you feel as comfortable as possible because they probably realize it might be weird for you to go without him.

FI moved to NC three months before I did, so I had to go to a bunch of family functions without him.
It wasn't bad. He has a sister, so I spent most of my time with her.
