I am having a discussion with my MOH (my sister about this). She says the inner envelope should be worded exactly the same way the outer envelope is (Mr. & Mrs. John Doe or Ms. Jane Doe Mr. John Smith). I say that that is acceptible to have the first names only (Mr & Mrs. John Doe.. John & Jane). Which one of us is correct?
TIA

Re: Inner Envelope Question
My invitations came with a 'tips' booklet that suggested the outer envelope and inner envelope read exactly the same thing, the only thing you are dropping is the address:
Outer: Mr. and Mrs. John Smith 45 W 9th st Deer Park, NY 11703
Inner:
Mr and Mrs John Smith
If they have children that are not getting their own invitation the child are only listed on the inner envelope.
Inner:
Mr. and Mrs. John Smith Laura Smith Denise Smith

Re: Inner Envelope Question
I used the first names only but we're having a casual wedding. Doing the Mrs. & Mr. is more formal. Either way you can do whatever you want to do.

Re: Inner Envelope Question
Technically your sister is right, but I didn't follow this. I wrote Mom and Dad, Aunt Cathy, Karen, etc.-to me this seems so much more personal. The only time I wrote the same as the outer envelope is when I wasn't too close with the guests (work associates, extended family I've rarely ever seen).

Re: Inner Envelope Question
I have the inner envelopes done with Mr. and Mrs. But you can do it however you want it. I was easier for me to be consistent. And I like the formality of it and lastly I didn't know all of the spouses names and it took long enough to have my FMIL get me the addresses I needed I didn't want to have to wait for spouses name too!

Re: Inner Envelope Question
I think technically your sister is correct but I printed mine with 'Uncle John and Aunt Mary' - I thought it was more of a personal touch.

Re: Inner Envelope Question
I went off of a couple of etiquette websites and they all said that you only use Mr./Ms./Mrs. and their last name, no first names. But I think it's more personal if you use the first names. I don't think anyone is going to be questioning you when they see your invites so your safe either way!

Re: Inner Envelope Question
Ettiquette says to use Mr. and Mrs. Smith, but I am using first names with no last names. It is more personal.

Re: Inner Envelope Question
I believe the inner envelopes should be addressed the same as the outer envelopes.
Mr and Mrs John Doe is the proper/traditional way.
