We didnt do inner envelopes but I when I've received invites the inner envelopes didnt have anything written on them.

Yes you are supposed to write something.
The outer envelope should read:
Mr. & Mrs. John Smith
The inner envelope could read the same, or be a bit more personal:
John & Mary Smith
Or you could be very personal and write:
Uncle John & Aunt Mary
It depends on personal preference, how formal your wedding will be, etc.
We had a formal affair, but wanted a bit of a personal touch so we went with:
John & Mary Smith

we just wrote the first names of the people on the inner envelopes
that way you can throw out the outer envelope, and keep the invite and information in the inner
it also clarifies exactly who the invitation is for (in case there are children in the household and you are not inviting children to your wedding)

Inner's are less formal than the outer's.
I agree, very good if you are not inviting kids from the household.

Im having a formal affair and I did not write anything on the inner. Ive been to many wedding's and only 1 had my name on the inner and that had to be uh 5+ yrs ago.
