You dont have to have 2.

We have inner and outer because thats the way our invitations were ordered.

Basically the outside would read:

Mr and Mrs Mike Smith
1313 Mockingbird lane,
Ny, NY 10022

the inner envelope would say:

Mr and Mrs Mike Smith.

The inner envelpoe is a specific way to say 'hey, the people listed here are the people invited.

For example you have Mr and Mrs smith. Their kids are **** and Jane (are under 18) and you are inviting all of them. The outter would read the same as above.

The Inner:
Mr and Mrs Mike Smith
**** and Jane

If the kids are NOT invited, their names would NOT appear on the inner envelope.

Hope this helps.

I agree, not necessary to have both. We had both because we liked that the inner envelope states exactly who is invited and also because we thought it looked more elegant. But it's not needed at all

i dont have inner so on the outer i am going to write 'to smith family' just so they know its for the adults and kids. I just dont know how to address to single friends who can bring a date. should i just tell them when i speak to them? Im sure they are going to want to know and ask if they can bring someone at some point lol

the inner is also used to 'hold' everything together. So if your guests throw out the outer envelop that was in the mail they have the inner envelope to hold all the pieces of the invite. some types of invites do not require this.

My invitations only come with 1 envelope because they have a ribbon that holds all the pieces together.
