So FW has switched jobs in the past few months, and may or may not have health insurance thru her current employer by our wedding. (some paperwork got messed up or something)
I am nervous about her going out of the country w/o insurance.
At what point can i add her to mine- do i start the process before the wedding? do i need the marriage certificate? and if so, will it then be retroactive to the wedding day (when i get the certificate 2-4 weeks later)?
we are getting married 2 days before we will be out of the country (leaving sunday) so this will be a little buffer, but not enough to get the certificate and ppwk in!
Check with your HR department. I am on FH's insurance and we didn't have to prove anything. They know we're not yet married, but we are living together. Each ins. company has their own stipulations so the fact that you guys live together already... they may not care.
The worst they can tell you is no. I'd just go right to your HR people and find out. Also MAKE SURE about her insurance from her old job.
I work in healthcare and if you'd like to PM me... I can easily find out if she has active health insurance or not :)

Insurance Question?
I work in HR and I agree w/Katielynn - every company has its own set of rules. I would def contact your HR dept and ask what the protocol is. at my company, we can add same sex partners if they show us proof of living together and sharing finances. As of marriage date - I only ask for a copy of the marriage certificate and for the employee to fill out some paperwork. Everything goes retroactive to the marriage date, so even if I get stuff late, it all goes back to the date of marriage.

Insurance Question?
Thanks! I will ask HR but she was originally a little confused because of the changes due to DOMA. I work for a private company, so anything 'different' takes a little longer to check.

I know personally with my job, you do need the marriage certificate. However, if you call HR they may be able to start the process to add her and then finalize it when you get your marriage certificate!
