Insureing your engagement ring

Original post by Shmar

I know there was a forum on this, but I was wondering if anyone had recently insured their ring. Do I really need to do this? My FH and his parents keep saying I need to because it cost him a fortune.

Can anyone recommend something? Since I live at home I could put it under my parents until I move out. I just don't know how involved this can be.

my fh is a total financial nerd...he got the insurance before he even gave it to me and he pays for it. we have an apartment, but he found out for when we buy a house, that you have to get it written into your homeowners. our insurance is only like $100 a year. imo...totally worth it. i know a lot of people who have had to have their rings replaced!

Hi,
You should definitely insure the ring. Especially if it was that much money.

God forbid you lost it! :

I just put mine on my homeowner's policy and it went up $153.00 a year. With a $500.00 deductable. I think it's with it.

I think it was like $25.00 for every 1,000.

I had it appraised on the spot for $80.00 at Cambridge Jewelers in Rooslevelt Field Mall.
Plus, most places appraise it 25% higher then it should be (covers the deductible).
Maybe your FH already had it appraised when he bought it??

My FI only bought a warranty if a stone falls out or if it gets stolen. The homeowner's covers it no matter what!

The lady I spoke with when I added the ring on told me that it is so important to do this because you never know what can happen. Even though you can't replace the same ring (sentimental value), you can still get another one.
She me a story about a woman who took her $20,000 ring off to wash her hands and went back a second later and it was gone! Can you imagine!

They covered it. I realize that most people do not have $20,000 rings, but if something happens I feel comfortable knowing at least I can afford another one.
Mine was appraised for only $6,500 and I still thinks it's worth it.
I would be heart broken .

Good Luck!

Since I still live with my parents, my FH had them insure it through that....that is how he asked for permission, he said to them that he needed their help 'insuring something' and then showed them the ring. Once we are married, we will move it on to our own insurance, but definitely GET IT INSURED RIGHT AWAY!!

i got my ring insured..me and FH live together but we do not own a home...we rent..so we put it under our renters insurance

i highly recommend putting under your parents homeowners insurance...
